Default head porting and polishing

Hey

i got a gsr head, getting fitted with crower valvetrain

what are some tips while doing port and polish? i will not be doing this, but a respected head porter out here wants me to find info on this, he wants to know what guys are doing within the first inch of the port.

I have checked out http://www.theoldone.com and saw what he has done with the b16 heads.

but does anyone else have and insight to this? any guru's willing to pass on some tips to a neighbour?

theres not too many people here in bc that know what they are doing, so trying to find the right info is almost impossible. also alot of the v8 guys dont wanna touch the hondas because its so new to them.

thanks in advance

i know exactly what you mean

he has over 30 years of porting experience, but has never touched a honda, only chevy and ford stuff

he is very repituable around here, holds lots of track titles (go-karts, and oval, drag racing)

he's worked on the fastest st. legal car in canada

im aware of the consequences

he is good at what he does, im sure he can do this without any info, but any info would help

you'll never learn anything unless you try, and obviously there's people out there who have tried, and have some sort of knolegde about this

Here is a good place to start: http://www.team-integra.net/se...D=353

And some info here:
http://www.alaniztechnologies.....html

Some domestic sport compact info:
http://www.esslingerengineering.com/

And to reiterate what everyone else said, having a V8 guy work on your 4 banger is not the best idea, however he may be able to leverage his knowledge of small motor dynamics (go-kart engines) into a successful P&P. Or you could just have him do a mild P&P.

thank you that is exactly what i wanted to hear

he wants to learn about import tuning, im sure the big boys like steph and jojo have former v8 guys helping them out. its just trying to find the right conection.

im not going super radical with the head, i still want it streetable, and in the future depending if i want a full race car, i can have that option.

you should see some of his go-karts, direct drive and easy 60 mph. i took one out last summer and it hit 9000 rpm so fast

porting v8's, v6's, or 4 cylinder heads are no different. It's just matter of where to remove metal from. I have ported and polished heads many times on Honda's, Acura's, Toyota's and some fords and chevy's.

Now, what I do is port match the exhaust and intake manifold gasket to the head.

clean up intake runners and then smooth out the intake bowls and throat.
I like to use a 80 grid roll on the intake side. And with the bowls, I use 80 then 120 grids and finish of with the cross buffs to make it smooth.

And on the exhaust side I do the same process except; I finish of you porting with a 120 grid and smooth out with a cross buff and than use wd40 and then use a finer cross buff to get the mirro look.

Also, tell your guy remove any sharp edges on combustion camber and cc the combustion after that.

Just tell him to focus on the throat and bowls on both intake and exhaust. These where Honda head get the most improvements.

All of my head are benchflow tested before and after useing superflow 600 by an out side shop that I deal with.

wow thanks for the buttload of info.

does the gsr head have the 'dimples' on the intake side? or is that b16?

i read a article about some people getting rid of them,, and other saying to leave them in? what do you think of this?

i dont want you to give any of your secrets away, im just trying to get as much info as i can, to have better understanding about head porting and polishing

THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS TO FIND OUT WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO DO WITH YOUR CYLINDER HEAD. FOR EXAMPLE YOU NEED TO ASK YOURSELF, WHAT RPM RANGE IS YOUR ENGINE GOING TO OPERATE IN THE MOST.

SECOND ARE YOU GOING TO BE FORCE INDUCTIONING THE HEAD OR USE NITROUS? WHAT TYPE OF MANIFOLD ARE YOU PLANNING TO USE? WHAT COMPRESSION RATIO IS YOUR ENGINE OPERATING IN NOW? WHAT IS THE DURATION OF YOUR CAMSHAFT?

THESE ARE SIMPLE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF, OR YOUR HEADPORTER SHOULD BE ASKING YOU. BEFORE TOUCHING YOUR HEAD. DON'T BE DISCOURAGED IF YOUR HEAD PORTER ONLY WORKS IN FORIEGHN CHEVY CYLINDER HEADS. HE MAY HAVE MORE EXPEREINCE THAN WHAT YOU THINK.
IF YOU HAVEN'T ASK THESE QUESTIONS YET THEN YOU MUST.

dont worry all of those questions have already been asked and answered

im not discouraged at all that he's worked on domestic stuff at all, he's ported the heads on my mustang and made some good power outta them.

he has over 30 years of experience, the amount of knowledge in his pinkie is much greater i have

the head is going to have a small shot of nitrous, upper rpm range, and using the gsr manifold for now

i dont want him to hog the think right out, as im sill pondering if i should go turbo within the next year or so, or go all out on this head, and save up and buy another motor

almost all of the power you will make is on the short turn radius. port match the head, but do not match the manifold to the gasket. you want the manifold to be a little bit larger than the port on the head to allow for misalignment. it will not be perfect. try to take off as little as possible, the more you take off the larger the hole, the lower the intake velocity and odds are you will just be hurting yourself dramatically at low rpm. make sure the short turn is smooth and right, polish a lot on alluminum and youlle be set.

wow thanks

are talking about the intake on the short turn radius?

yea right now im gonna use the stock gsr head, maybe clean up the runners on it, but leave the ports stock, until i figure out what setup i wanna run
