Strip it... make it lighter then your car goes faster and this will cost you nothing.

Remove the power steering and A/C. Should be good for a few horses and again, it's free.

I would say:
- $260 - DC JDM 2.5'' Header. From 3,000-8,400 rpm it preformed better than most $1,000 headers including the legendary SMSP header. 8-10whp
- $120 - 2.5'' cat
- $650 Mugen Intake. 8-9whp
- $Free - Advance the timing to 18 degrees. 3-5whp

------
Total
$1,030 19-24whp.

remove header and exhaust
gets louder and faster, lol
Add any free stickers you can find. Every sticker adds at least 5hp.

That's a very bad mentality. There is no cheap way to get horsepower unless you're skilled enough to do fabricate your own parts.

I think theres a difference between cheap and "Biggest HP gains for the least money". Maybe the poster should have phrased it more like "most cost effective engine mods" or something like that.

Anyway I think people here have it wrong about spending several thousand for just a few hp. Its just not worth it IMO. If I spend $3,000 on just my engine, I want 30-50% more power. Yet people here do it, and only gain 15-20whp.

Surpised no one offered him the biggest cost/power adder.

Just get some NAWZ.

Honestly, it is the cheapest way to have power.

I agree about the DC 4-1 header idea. I had one on my '00 and after taking it back to stock for D Stock racing (much lower PAX, CSP), there was in fact a noticable loss in power along with a MSD Ignition (previous owner's idea). Keep in mind the cat does change too.

Hi, Where in the UK are you from ?
In summary your best bet is to go for a new exhaust manifold (or header ). Plus a custom cat or decat dependant on how well you know your local MOT tester . How much money do you want to spend ? + are you willing to import stuff yourself ?

Maybe I overreacted. When I read these things it is usually someone who has 100 bucks and wants 500 horsepower

Have you looked into the homemade ITB setup? People are making great gains with it, and it shouldn't cost more than $400 to build or about $600 to buy.
