Default Chevron with Techron pushed to its limits!

Well, many of you may know who i am some may not, but about 6 months ago i made the move to merge with DNR performance (DAVE owner) who is very good buddy of mines who's been street racing in Nor Cal for the longest. Many know that we have a inground dynojet in house, which gives us unlimited testing source. Well to make it short Dave and I wanted to know how far we can push the limits of california's 91 octane pump gas. Being able to drive a car hard when he wanted to without worrying about detonation was very important to Dave so we set out to see how far we can push it.

Some of you may know of Dave's silver civic coupe, since ive been at the shop we have recorded over 150 dyno pass on this car in a matter of 4 months. We thought we've tried everything in the book to squeeze as much power as we can out of this setup but we were just at the tip of the ice burg.

Here is the setup.
B18c1 block stock bore
OEM GSR crank
OEM GSR rods
OEM PR3 pistons (jdm b16a)
B16A head
DNR head work milled .025
supertech hi-comp valves (overall compression is 11.5/1 +/-)
Custom spec DNR cams (similar to jun 3)
port matched runners Type R manifold
OEM type R injectors
Aem regulator
bocsh inline fuel pump
DTR 4-2-1 street header/DTR 4-1 megaphone header
AEM cold air intake
Skunk/mugen ECU with field vtec controller...

The most we have ever made with the street header was 211Hp and with the 4-1 megaphone header was 213hp... this will be our baseline comparison. Of 150+ runs we have made before this was the maxed we pulled out

many of you may be fimilar with this manifold done plenty of times by RLZ and Endyn. We'll Dave and i wanted to test it out for ourselves so we spent close to 1 week on and off cutting and porting this OEM type R manifold till it was almost ready to fall apart. I can totally see why guys would charge a good amount to perform this task "lets just say it was a bitch!" We must of taken 10mm from the bore off of the plenum and plenty more on the runners Then Dave did his magic to finish it up.. we had this manifold at our shop for over a month completed but never had a chance to tested untill now.... here is manifold on the car...

So it was friday night we were threw the 4-1 megaphone header back on was pretty exited to see it would do on it first pass and boy we were not let down at all..

here is the second dyno pulll with the new manifold compared to our baseline.

as you can see nothing but top end... we did not expect it to pick up that much just off a manifold but we were definately in for some more... Dave at that point already knew what he had to do .. the flat head came out and in a few mins the the cold are intake was off car and was replaced by a short Ram with velocity stack intake.. He figured if the plenum was allow more to flow to the motor why dont we force more air in plenum.... so after a few more passes here is what we came up with...

By this time everyone in the shop was in shock.. we have never made this much power on OEM displacment block on pump gas before.. swapping the intake put us in the 220s solid.....

well.. you know what they say.. more air.. means more fuel. By this time Dave was on a roll... fuel pressure was 60psi on stock injector which was barely keeping up with the motor even with our added inline pump.. but Dave knew more fuel was needed so, he cranked it up to 66psi after a few runs with is what happen...

cleaned out the whole powerband...

after a few more passes we definately sure it was tapped... i though to my self there is no way it can make any more power... But! Dave wasnt done.. back came out the screw driver this time not taking then intake off but adding to it legnth.. about and extra 9 inches... and putting the stack back on it..

what do you do know.. adding more length to the intake built more velocity hence pulling in even more air....instead of bends with the AEM intake this was stragiht forward... pulled a few more runs what do you know.. it just wont stop!

the length of the intake shifted the air flow which caused to lose alittle more low end but pick up more up top... by now it was pretty late we recorded more then 20+ pulls on the dyno and tried many different thing.... but what do you do when you make 224.9 and so..... you try to make to 225.... i though for sure 224 is where it caps at.. but 225 sound so much nicer... so dave hops in to the car and just chances with the v-tec controller giving 5 % more fuel at high RPM for the hell of it. to see what it does...
with 2 back to back pullls we made our mark 225 Hp

by now were where all pretty beat and tired big head ache from inhaling all the exhuast fuems so we pulled the off the dyno and was happy about what had just taken place... many of you may find this informative some may may think its all bull but this was too good to let sit untold.. so making good horsepower with Chevron with Techron is definately within reach if time is taken to put quality parts together with hours of tunning.... here is graph with all the good runs

enjoy!... back to work for me..

Thats some excellent info! Also shows that you dont need crazy compression to make awesome power with Jun3/skunk2 type cams.

Did you guys basically just make the tank on the intake manifold bigger or was there some special porting done to it?

Wow! Danny and Dave why didn't you guys try going with bigger injectors ? That motor had more potential! Great Job

Great work DTR

So the final CR was 11.5 +/-?

I would have stayed @ Dyno Run: 173(dark blue)

10 in mid is better than 2 in peak, its about rate of acceleration, not numbers game

very nice job, makes me wonder what my engine is capable of with more dyno runs

i totally agree overall running the short ram with made a cleaner power band.. can see the dip once we swapped intake legnths..

Wow good info with detail. Would you enlighten us with some more detail as to how to work with the manifold, (cutting, porting and welding it??) Good job. Those are some very respectful numbers for the setup that you have. A lot of stock OEM components and you guys have put out 225 hp. That's mad props to you guys. Betcha if you guys get a hondata or AEM EMS 230 wouldn't be that far behind.

Amazing graphs! Tuning is a key part of building your car, and these guys show just what to do. Congrats, that thing pulls tough I'm sure.

Great job guy's . Keep up the good work. So what are the #'s with full exhaust and filtered intake, like it would be daily driven?

actually, if they just swapped the skunk2 bin out and did a custom one...it'd be just as good as hyundaidata or aem. considering the chipped ecu, with the right program, shares upwards of 98% same code as hyundaidata

but, damn...those are some heavy numbers....I'm VERY impressed. keep up the work y0, and get some more numbers...and some time slips...and some videos, and some boobie pics too!

the filter and aem cai wouldnt make it loose much at all and the side exit exhaust is what i run on my daily driver so i would say it make 220+hp to the wheels when i drive it to work and home almost every day.

Im really excited about these new cams we have been working on, should be doing more testing comparison vs the big name cams soon..

Thats what its all about, informative information and good write ups like this, not some stupid guess my whp thread . And your only running 11.5.1 . Makes me rethink my whole setup. good *** tuning though, I guess it does pay to have a dyno with countless hours using it.

yes... thats what its all about.. honda"TECH" informative and educational..and yes.. countless hours on the dyno... i even admit that we blew the rings out on this motor at somewhere around run 100.. and it was honed and reringed to keep tuning.
