My latest project... *Pics*
i built some fiberglass pods for my 5 1/4" drivers couple weeks ago. basically, i wanted to build new door panels for my focals, but since i have a type r, i didnt want to cut my door panels or anything like that. i wanted everything to be reversible and removable so i came up with the idea to use my stock speaker cover as a frame for my pods. it might be hard to understand wut im trying to do, but
here are some pics and a tutorial, but i forgot to send myself the first 3-5 pics of the project. the 3 pics were of the cut speaker cover, cut MDF and MDF mounted onto the speaker cover. here are the other pics. when i have time to upload the pics from my phone and onto the computer, i will post them up.
wut u will need: MDF, fiberglass mat, resin, paintbrush (cut the brushes to about 1.5" long, it will work with the resin better) DURAGLASS or MARGLASS, grinder, sanding disc for the grinder, sandpaper, couple of screws (if u need it to hold ur shape), jigsaw/router and paint
1. the first step was to take out the speaker cover. (pic will be up shortly)
2. cut the MDF according to the size of ur speaker and make sure that it wil fit nicely. (pic will be up shortly)
3. mount the MDF and make sure the angle of both sides are equal. i used mdf, hot glue and screws.(pic will be up shortly)
4. once u have the shape, use fiberglass mat, and some adhesive spray glue to hold the fiberglass in place. cut some long and short strips of fiberglass. when u mount the fiberglass, make it only one layer of fiberglass because if the fiberglass is too thick, the resin will not soak all the way through. have one layer at a time then apply resin to it. if u need more fiberglass, repeat this step. (look out for air bubbles and BE CAREFUL when applying to the frame. make sure it does not go over the edges or else the speaker cover will not fit. if in case it does go over, use the grinder and grind off the excess fiberglass around the edges).

the first side speaker cover i did, i used fleece, and it turned out to be too thick of a material to use, so thats y i decided to use just straight fiberglass. u can see from the pics

this picture is after it was sanded down, but it is still too thick.
heres a back view

5. after u get something like that, test for fitment

6. once u have fitment, get some DURAGLASS OR MAR-GLASS and apply a coat of it. i would use duraglass over mar-glass simply because its easier to sand. but both are the same thing, short strand fiberglass body filler. unfortunately, i forgot to take pics of it with duraglass or mar-glass. but u basically want it all over the pod evenly. once it dries, use a grinder with a sanding disc and sand it all the way down. i got lazy and went half *** on this step. once again, when ur done, test for fitment
7. sand it until it is even and smooth. i used up to 100 grit. i would suggest all the way up to 400-800 if u want it to be paint ready. i got lazy and painted it flat black and u can see the sanding lines.

8. last step is to paint wutever color u like or vinyl or carpet.
