well if your driving along and you happen to notice your oil pressure take a dive, pretty good change that something just broke/fucked up

now if you didnt have that gauge, how would you know what just happened until the engine went ....cough.....sputter......flatline..... ?

It's like any other gauge, they are not necessray, but really help to monitor your engine and ensure that everything is fine.

ok,
simple enough.

well in that case,
what are the types of problems that occur that cause your oil pressure to drop?

is it something to due with the oil delivery system?
like maybe you have your feed/return line setup incorrectly,

or just something that happens when **** goes bad... like a blown ring or somethin?

(learning is fun )

blow your head gasket, piston, oil pan seal, or just plain blow your motor. It important if your using anything other than a stock setup (turbo, or NOS) Just another way to monitor your car.

You can tell from your oil pressure if your engine is totally warmed up. Your coolant temp might be up to normal but it takes longer for your oil pressure to come down at idle.

Your oil pressure would go down if you ran out of oil (doh), like from a leak. It will also go down if your oil pump is taking a ****. One guy on here had pieces of headgasket stuck in an oil journal and it starved the engine of oil. BTW don't drive your car if you have no oil pressure .

Simply put...

Oil is the blood of your engine.

Isn't it obvious?

aah ok,
much clearer now.

basically a drop in oil pressure is what your keeping an eye out for with the gauge.
and this basically happens when things come loose in the engine.. something brakes.. a seal goes.. etc

sounds about right?
