I'm just trying to figure out what the top speed would be with a ATS 4.9 Final drive on my R.I have 215/45/16 on it now and I shift usally at 9k rpm's.Does anyone run this setup?
I run 225/45/15 Hoosiers and cut out at ~142mph indicated. Not sure how close it is to the actual speed.
FYI, stock gearing w/ATS 4.929 final.

Doesn't matter where you normally shift, does matter where your car makes peak power (usually around 8 K rpm on a stockish ITR). The stock top speed is about 143-145 mph, with a 4.4 final drive.
New top speed with a 4.9 FD will be about 130 mph.
That being said, you'll most likely get to 130 faster though.

I think with my 215/45/16 the speedo is off like 3 mph.How many rpm's are you turning and 142 mph?I usally try to shift around 8K maybe a lil' higher depending if I'm racing or not.I go to around 9K when I'm stringing it out which is not really that often.Just trying to decide if I should go with the FD when I put a new clutch and flywheel in.

Holy crap, is that right, Ed? I didn't realize the speedo was that far off.
For the post above, I'm hitting the limiter at that point.

May have to adjust somewhat for tire size, and I know you have more power than a "stock" ITR Jason.
But it still comes down to 4.4/4.929 x previous (stock) top speed, ...
= previous top speed x 0.893

I'd watch out for the guy drafting you with a stock FD down a long straight/speedway once you top out and if there's still some room left before the next turn/chicane. hehe

Mine hit 145 on a Dyno
I think a friend captured it in this vid:

with stock rev limiter, ats 4.9 final, and a little extra power than stock; I was banging off the 8600 rev limiter in 5th gear on the hwy one time. ~145 indicated.
I calculated it one time with stock tires and it was like 138mph.
No reason to keep the stock 4.4 unless you're Ed/ zyg.....
And fwiw, you get there a LOT faster. I don't recommend testing it out though.
Jason's speed is off significantly b/c of the tire size.

The top speed of the stock ITR is higher than 145. Mine, stock, saw 155mph w/ 3 people in the car. I've got the video
. I've got the ATS FD w/ stock gearing and with 205/50/15's it was showing ABOUT 135-137ish when I hit 8400rpms in 5th gear. I'm now running 215/45/16's but I haven't done a top speed run with this setup. If anyone wants to see the 155mph video, right click here and save (30mb). It requires DIVX codec. I was not driving, this was the previous owner. Please don't flame me. The blue car in the right lane when everyone goes OH **** is a cop. That explains the "running" in the end.

totally agree with you bro mine brother hit atleast 155 like you did and perhaps even 160 the needle was stuck and couldn't go anymore....with the ATS and 205/50/15 Azenis and two people in the car..and didn't take long either to get to that speed..that **** is scary driving that speed in that light *** car...this was accomplished on the NJ TWP at Exit 14 alongside Newark Airport..

Look guys, the speedo's a bit off at that speed.
Especially if you've got different size tires on.
Though, with three people in the car it might have been sitting a little lower and therefore you might have lessend the drag coefficient.

With a 215/46/16 = 23.6" DIamater the top speed at 9000 rpms with a 4.9 FD is 152.1 mph
a 205/50/15 ATS FD at 9000 RPMs is 148
Stock Tire 195/55/15 ATS at 9000 RPM is 150.8 mph
Stock Fuel cut woudl make a 215/45/16 = 142
205/50/15 with stock fuel cut is 140 mph.
True top speed of a USDM R assuming we had enough power to over come drag is 159 mph

I expect that is if you make peak power @ 9K instead of the stock 8K?
However this is representative of a stock and OEM ITR powerplant ...

159 x (8/9) = 141.3 mph
Then again, if you had something like this and ran some longer gearing ...

... then you could top out in the true 170-180 mph range.
Car and Driver article from Josh's site of a 97 ITR (check the gearing/speed specs).

BTW -- The above turbo motor is for sale along with the tuned Hondata S200 unit, AVC-R (glove box mounted along with Greddy Warning meter EGT and Oil Temp), MSD, etc.
If interested please e-mail: Steve@sgt-racing.com about them since that's where the car was disassembled.
Thanks for putting up with my little sales pitch.

Yes, unless it was going down a hill or had a nice tail wind.
I once did a true 124 mph in my fairly stock 1st Gen 87 CRX Si,
which was only supposed to have a top speed of 112 mph.

Thanks for all the good responses guys!Looks like I'm gonna be getting the ATS 4.9 after all.I've heard the 4.9 FD and Lightweight flywheel makes a really big difference in acceleration, but I was always worried about the top speed.Looks like I have nothing to worry about now, just glad I got a Mugen chipped obd1 ecu with a higher rev limit,so that helps out alot.

Just because power falls at a certain point doesn't mean the curve after it can't support increasing acceleration.
My R bounced the rev limiter in 5th gear laying down less than 173whp with 195/50 tires, a true calculated speed of 155mph by the way. It made peak power at 7,800rpm but sure as heck kept pulling past that.

Actually it does, simple physics wrt the power needed to counteract the aero drag of the car at that speed or higher (in top gear).
