M3's are sweet... different than the ITR though.
Replacement parts are waay more expensive, reliability isn't as high, but they are very fast, handle sweetly, and have tons more TORQUE from that straight six than the tiny B18C will ever have. Plus chicks dig em
A worthy replacement? Yes.
An equal to the raw, visceral experience of driving an ITR? Not quite...
But, at least they don't get stolen as much.

Those were considered M-Tech's though. If I am not mistaken.

I own a 98 M3 for about 4 years now, auto-x and tracked it for 2 years. I do about 20 auto-x's a year and about 12 track days. All info posted above is false and far from truth.
I have steadily given my M3 a HARD life and the reliabilty is incredible. There are no major problems that I can think of that ever arise in the motor, just stay on top of the oil and it will be fine. Suspension components do wear out, but that is expected. There is a ton of info on the web about these cars so if you enjoy do your own work you can get alot of help. Early 95 build cars had what are said to be "weak" valve retainers, which cost something like $500 parts and labor to replace. Also they had a water pump issue, which assuming its past the 60k mark it has been replaced with the updated version or the owner took a preventive step and replaced it before.
As far as it being not being as fast on a road course, that is completely false. I have driven a friends type-r on a road course and felt the car would need alot more to be able to keep up with an M3. The type-r just does not have the torque to pull you out of the corners.
The type-r is a great car, handles, brakes and accelerate very well for what it is. But I don't think the type-r is GODS gift to man or the next best thing since sliced bread. There are cars out there that do everything the type-r does and better with out one the biggest headaches ever, theft. The only reason the Type-r is such a "incredible" car is becasue its rare and thats it.
Just remember when was the last time you saw a stock part have such a great impact all the little suckers that they have to have it for there car. Angle eyes, M3 mirrors, z3 fenders...........

My angle on this is from a person who actually uses his car what it was meant for, road course and auto-x. NOT STREET STUNNING. A street race doesn't even come close to showing what a car is capable off, remember this is real life, not a movie.
As a side not, a good drag car doesn not need brakes or a steering wheel, so I don't see how they get full use of a "car".

I consistently passed one at my last HPDE. Both my car and his car are stock. Could be driver, as he looked like he was only 16-17, but I was passing him very easily.

It's pretty funny to see a well thought out post followed by .... uh.... no comment. You might not agree with M3Racer, but at least he thought about what he was going to write and tried to help.
Do you think some of you guys could actually put some THOUGHT into your posts, or just not post at all? You don't have to comment with 'i heard' and 'i think' when you really have no idea at all.
Chris - who notes that he isn't talking to EVERYONE in this thread, just to make that clear.
