My motor has a very loud tick...
Hey-
This is just a question to gather some opinions... A while ago my motor had a very light tick at certain RPM's, and would disappear as the RPMs increased. I took it for a spin the other night and the sound got progressively worse, to the point where its louder than the exhast at idle
The timing belt has nice tension, and I havent had a chance to check the valve clearances yet... The turbo has no shaft play. Another note, upon startup the noise will occur, and disappear slightly when the oil light turns off.
Any ideas? I wont be around my car for a while so im just gathering some opinions to see what it might be.. but as of right now im thinkin the valves need to be adjusted (but i just did a valve adjustment maybe a few months ago
)
whatcha think?

gsr motor. I had my mechanic help me with the valve adjustment not too long ago... the ticking got loud over the course of about 5 minutes after hard acceleration, not over an extended period of time.

Hmmm.... funny you say that, not too long ago I had my oil light come on at idle. I replaced the main bearings and put a new oil pump in. What are some things I can do to check further symptoms? The ticking is so loud and violent I can feel it in the gas pedal. When i accelerate slightly it ticks, and then wheni let off the gas it gives a lil more of a tick till the rpms fall.
Does that help?

If you actually have enough time to listen to the pinging before the oil light goes out, I say you have a problem. Either the main and rod bearings are worn, or your oil pump is worn. Install an oil pressure gauge and compare the readings to the stock specs.

like the other guys sounds maybe like rod bearings. but it is hard to tell with not being in front of the car. did you change the rod bearings when you replaced the main bearings.

no i didnt change the rod bearings
my mechanic said it wasnt needed
The main bearings and oil pump were replaced not even 1000 miles ago.

Good advice about the oil pressure gauge... My oil pump only has about 1000 miles on it, while the rod bearings have about 100,000 miles on them.
If you want i can record that noise when i go home and upload it
Id check the valve clearnaces but like i said im not home right now... My educated guess would point to the rod bearings right now... seeing as how a qualified mechanic did my valve clearances for me.
oh well... gimme an excuse to rip my motor out and fix the fockin thing for once.

install the oil pressure gauge... get a cheap lil autozone mechanical one, it doesn't matter unless you just want to get a nice one and keep it mounted in the car. that will help you start to eliminate things. i wouldn't let it go neglected though...

and second does it kinda sluggesh on the start up?</TD></TR></TABLE>
Well i can feel it in the gas pedal when im driving, almost feels like something is tapping on the firewall!

good idea... what should i look for? just the general oil pressure? Do you think its alright to let the car idle when its tapping?
My dads car makes almost the exact same noise... except his is a LOT quiter, and disappears after its warm.

From my personal experience it sounds like it could be your LMA, mine are shot and sound exactly like how you described it. Upon start up its REALLY loud, then as oil circulates to the head they keep on clicking away just not as bad. Hope this helps!

Hmmm.... would the problem jump from quiet to loud over the course of 5 minutes? They were real quiet and then after a race they got amazingly loud. Ill check the clearnaces soon, how should I check the LMAs? just push down on them?

If you would of read the 1st reply you might already of been done with this.

Anyways does the sound go away when your racing or hit higher oil pressures. The lma's will stop making noise when oil pressure increase but will start making noises when oil pressure drops. Or press down on the vtec lobe rocker arm. It should move freely and spring back, if it sticks then you should replace them.
