New Style Sunroof Plug Kit for 92-95 Civic hatch/coupe are now available NO 56K
Well we finally finished up the SPK for the 92-95 Civic. See below for pics. The kit includes the following:
6 page instruction booklet
Bracket Locating Tool
This ensures that you mount each bracket at the same height relative to the roofline. This insures a flush mount evry time.
3 gram tube of Loctite Superbond adhesive
This is used for tacking the brackets in place while they are imbedded in epoxy. It is not used to provide any strength in the finished product.
Devcon 2 Ton Epoxy-2part. Double plunger syringe included. Just squeeze and mix
This is where the bracket holding strength comes from.
16 Tiny custom bent and bunched panel brackets
These are not available at your neighborhood hardware store.
16 tiny black countersunk machine screws and black nylocks
These fit flush with the panel surface and blend into the carbon well.
2.7 oz tube of Loctite black silicon
Seals the panel flush with the body and keeps you dry in a car wash. Ice cube flattened.
Small paintbrushes for the epoxy
Used for embedding the brackets in the flange.
[B]UV Clear coated carbon fiber sunroof panel weighs slightly more than 1 lb./B]
There is only 1/16" gap all the way around the panel. Fits Perfect!
Scotchbrite pad
Used for prepping the bond area prior to bracket placement. When the epoxy is applied to the scuffed flange the scuffing disappears.
The sunroof assembly weighs about 35lbs. There is no other single part you can remove or replace to get the same benefits. Reduced weight up high.
This kit was installed on a racecar in process and has not received a new coat of paint yet but will soon. That's why the paint is so faded but these pictures show parts of the install. On a new car this would look awesome. Notice how the panel looks on the inside of the car-Perfect!
The kit is now for sale for $250 panel only and $315 for the kit plus shipping.
Very small gap prior to sealing
Underside angle
Underside straight on
Custom Brackets
Gap Close up just before sealing with silicon
Gap after sealing
Has some paper towel debris I forgot to blow off after I finished
Follows the roofline perfectly
Finished from above

This kit is cheaper than the one we sell for the 88-91 CRX since it has few parts and is slightly smaller. It takes about 4 hours to install. One issue of you decide to re-install your headliner in the dome light is bolted to the factory sunroof assembly and since it is removed you get no light. You could install the light by drilling two holes in a piece of carbon or lexan and then run some bolts through it and then sandwich your light assembly and the plate around the headliner and it would look like stock. I can help you with this part if you choose to keep it in.
We didn't invent the SPK... We just perfected it and made it easy to install.

Looks pretty nice.
Questions:
How does this affect the rigidity of the roof now??
How safe is this in a roll over-although it is a race car with a roll cage.
Why would it not be safer and more efficient to replace the whole roof skin with a DX/VX/CX one?

Rigidity. I don't think it the factory sunroof helped rigidity much since it has a moving mechanism and a seal. I haven't done any testing but I mostly intended this for racecars.
Safety - safer than a glass roof
As far as the roof skin goes you could do that but its quite a bit of work. All considerations for sure.

I agree but you have to remember the MADD TYTE CF bling yo!

i guess you dont care about enough about how your car performs. removing 40 lbs from the top of the roof is a lot of weight because of the way its distributed. gj race plates on making a good product.

In a perfect world we would be able to test side by side the same car w/ the same driver w/ the same mods except one car would have the CF roof plate and the other car would have the sunroof. What measurable difference would the CF plate get you? Not very much is my opinion. But like I said I have no hard proof. I think this product will definately appeal to the JDM stunners out there. My personal opinion
I'd rather spend my money where it counts and where it will have a significant impact on performance. My $.02.

I wonder if there are any mechanical engineers or physics experts here that could tell us what the difference would be on the exact same car that is missing approximately 30 lbs at the highest point of the car...
I doubt it's a crazy, huge, like WHOA difference, but I bet there would be a difference...I mean it is a pretty concentrated chunk of weight up there.
The windshield (being a bit lower in terms of Center of Gravity and a bit heavier than sunroof glass and mechanism) would probably make the approximately the same difference if it were to be replaced with lexan.

the main purpose of a CF sunroof insert would mainly be for the track cars that go to tracks with rules like "sunroofs must be bolted shut" or whatever,..but i agree people would probably buy this for the bling factor also
Nice!!
but if I dont want sunroof, I would of get a civic without sunroof!! or sell and get the one without te sunroof!!
just my 02

well being that i've already scraped the tar off my floor, removed every unnecessary bolt, removed my heater core, ect... finding an additional 40 lbs to take off without cutting the car sound like a good product to me. if you don't think weight makes a difference then you've never raced in a heavy si hb vs a lighter but similarily modded vx or dx. but yea, if your not a serious racer, this product is not for u, and isn't intended for you either.
ummm i drive a CX (gee, i dont have a hole in my roof) so I GUESS this product isnt for me....and the car takes me from point A to point B prefectly fine EVERYDAY w/ a b18c1, so when did my lil civic become a race car that needs to save every pound?

Not every Civic is a daily driver bro
(Although mine is, and I like my sunroof, weight distribution issues notwithstanding, so I guess this product isn't for me either).
It is a nice looking product though, and for those who do need a sunroof block off plate to meet track/ racing class regs, it's appears to be a good, well-designed kit
