anybody running carbs?
fuel management doesnt really exist with carbs. You run a pump that has less pressure, a low pressure fpr and tune the hell out of it, Im new to this whole deal, so im sure someone with more knowledge will reply.
Are you going to be running this on a b-series vtec motor? If so to have vtec work you need to activate it with switch...Tuning is pretty difficult from what Ive heard/read, not worth it unless you know what the heck's going on.
whats up man? hopefully you can help me out on this quick question. I'm trying to get as much power as I can out of my sister's car. Her car is a 90 Civic EX 5spd. We already have an AEM CAI, Tanabe muffler w/ 2.25 in piping, and a DC Sport header. I wanna know how can I get more power out of her engine. It has the original 1.6 liter SOHC non-VTEC engine. I would like to get at least 170-to 180 Hp to the wheels if possible. I've seen your features on Super Street and DRAG Sport magazines and I was wondering if you can help me seein as you know your **** when it comes to the D-series motors. The car has to remain street-reliable as it is her daily driver. please help me out...thanx
p.s. we kinda wanna keep it fuel injected too...hehehe!!

That's the biggest oxymoron I've ever heard.
Carbs aren't electronically controlled. So the Fuel Management is all mechanical.

1st, that header has to go! You can try one of my designs through http://www.rsmachines.com or http://www.exospeed.com
A camshaft would be ideal, and I have units that will be available in January from mild to wild. I cannot guarantee a smooth idle if you want to make tons of power on the street (using one of my more radical cams). One of my street cams should suffice.
As for injection, you are limited with that intake manifold. Try using a skunk2 or even the new edlebrock unit. A FPR or some ability to richen the mixture by tuning would be very wise.
Headwork is contains the most potential for power. RS Machine has always ported my heads from when I was a full fledged 12.6 street D16, to when I ran 10.7 as a full race sohc D15. It would be wise to give them a call.

Here is another post which is identical in the drag forum:

Here is a question.. how is the vtec set up on carbs if you have to need more fuel mapping when vtec kicks in.. if not do you have some kind of vtec killer cam setup or lock in vtec from the start of the motor. ( but the problem with that is you loose oil pressure that way and the motor will run like crap..) any info. would be very helpful to me so that I can make a final decision.. thanks...

Bisi is the honda carb master... he's done immense amounts of research on carbs, including the discovery that to get the same fuel atomization out of an injected setup as a carb, you would have to place the injectors 2 feet from the ports (!!). I've always been interested in running a carb set up from a street bike on an older d-series motor with some big compression and cam. Carbs will produce more power than a fuel injection set up will, though they are slightly less streetable and you will get lower gas mileage.
the main problem with running carbs on a VTEC set up is that, when run by the stock ECU, the motor runs under two different fuel maps, one for non-vtec driving, the other is for vtec. this would imply to me that you would either have to tune the carb for wide open driving (vtec engaged) and run shitty on the low end, or tune it for daily driving and risk running lean on the top end. this is why the majority of carb setups that you would see on a honda motor would be on a non-vtec motor. plus non-vtec is easier to tune.
good luck with your research.

sorry... i must have missed the part about locking VTEC....
hmm... well, you could run some sort of a 'killer' camshaft, or find a way to lock both sets of rocker arms together....i'd have to look at my head a bit before i can think of a way, since the secondary rocker actuation is hydraulic, there needs to be a place to put a pin of some sort to lock the rocker assembly...

love to run carbs on my H23vtec and some Crower stage 3 cams. no one makes throttle bodies for carb setup on H22 yet...... damn it i want to go carburated

I used to run carbs daily driven. 10 mpg street and 30 mpg freeway. Got it jetted once and drove it for about a year w/o problems. Drove to Vegas from the bay area and did a track event w/o problems. I even drive to L.A. all the time. Made 183 whp with Spoon cams on a bone stock B18C5 with VTEC.
A simple way to lock out the v-tec is to put 3 washers the size of the rockers into the holes where the pins go. You will still need to run the pins. Its hard to explain on the computer ........Any other info Please call us at 310-328-5514 ask for Jon
