Sc61 on b16 or sc34??
I am reading alot of conflicting opinions in the archives on sc61's on b16's my motor is built right now but not turbocharged yet. its 8.8:1 C/r I want to make about 420whp. on ocassion. 320-350 daily. but I want to pull fairly hard down low as soon as I step on it.and have a vicsious top end. Arturbo and a few other say all great things about the sc61as far as spool time but others say the sc34 is better for low end top end combo. Im asking yall directly what better for me..
b16 with 8:8.1 C/r - want to have responsive low end and very agressive top end.
sc61 or sc34?
is the top end significatly greater on teh sc61 over teh 34? I wish i could just test drive a motor with both.

If your looking for 420whp, then I would say go with a SC-61. At least thats what I have learned during research. The SC-61 will have much better top end that the SC-34, but they SC-34 will have better down low...not much but will definately spool faster. Although the SC-34 can make 420, but If you want RESPONSIVE low end and VERY AGGRESSIVE top end then I'd say go with the SC-61, just from what people have told me, what Precision has told me, and through lots of research.
The SC61 is so oversized for a B16 it is ridiculous. The B16 in stock or mildyly modified form just does not have enough exhaust flow to spool the SC61 as it should. The 34 is rated to 520 HP.
I just re-read his post. With 8.8:1 compression, you really do not have anything going in your favor to get the turbo spooling. You fully spool until damn near 6K then be done not too shortly after.
A big thing with turbos is just wanting to have the biggest one even when a smaller turbo would work just as well if not better. SC61 will def. give you a bigger "kick in the ***" when it kicks in, but that does not necessarily mean it is faster overall.

6000? Why 6000? Ive been told by Precision that it would spool by 5000...but then again i dont have as low as compression as he does either? Why is it too big for the B16
Rod, from Precision, and I had a big ole talk about this at PRI.
To explain it as simplly as possible teh B16 does not make enough exhaust to spool such a big turbo as quickly as a larger displacement motor. When you drop compression there is even less exhaust to spool the turbo.

Yea i know about the compression...in which his is really really low especially for a non FI car. But maybe he had something else?? Wouldn't upping the displacement help that?
Haven't seen them but since they are the biggest of the T3/T4 series i could only imagine haha. Well i think they are designed for 1.8 to 2.0L correct? So i dont have to far to go, which is why im picking the SC-61!

Exactly...Some people don't realize that the peak numbers don't mean everything, an sc34 will have a better power band on a b16a.

There were a couple T 100+ turbos at the PRI show this past week. They are about the size of a B series transmission.
What are your power goals?

In the last six months i feel forced induction has become mostly about bragging rights. Seems like everyone is tryign to make 400-500+ hp
The sc61 is great turbo and can easily make that power, but kyle is righ tyou dont have any thing in your favor. Small displacement motor with low compression
I would rather have a better usable power band and make less power than worry about peak #'s with alot of lag.

Exactly why I set a 1/4 time goal instead of a power goal. If I hit my goal with 465whp so be it. If it takes 535whp so be it.

From what I've heard, the SC61 spools full boost around 5200 for the 7-8 psi guys. That means between shifts you'll be in full boost. But is the SC34 making THAT much more power because the SC61 is out of its efficiency range? I haven't heard any SC61 B16a guys complaining yet. Like I said I'll have this setup soon enough, and I'll be sure to give very in-depth thoughts. If it is too laggy and super-peaky, I won't hesitate to try and trade a 1.8L or 2.0L person my SC61 for a SC34.

Turbonetics had a 101 and some other place (precision I think) had a 106.

No pictures, we didn't even take the camera...we only went for one day and had 12 hours of stuff to do in 8 hours.

And as a disclaimer, I'll fully openly admit, I'm on a horsepower trip.
