Took a trip to the Honda Dealer today about Seatbelts
Well, i have the same problem im sure many of you have. When I take off my seat belt it doesnt roll itself all the way back up. Come to find out, from what the guy at the honda dealer tol dme. Your suppose to keep your seatbelts buckled at all times. He said thats why its placed on the door, so u can just slip right in while its already buckled. I mentioned the recall on belts and he said all that was, is if your red release button on the buckle was chipped, they would replace that... He also mentioned thats why it said EMERGENCY RELEASE ONLY all over the ebrake. Because its not made to come off all th time, only during emergencys.
weird..

That's Hodas official word, he wasn't bullshitting you.
Cleaning the seatbelt loop guides and the seatbelt itself can sometimes help alot. (If you really want to unbuckle them.)

Yea, the seatbelt recall only deals the the buckle itself.

It is true that the belts are supposed to be permanently latched but, if the belt is not rolling up automatically like it SHOULD it needs to be replaced. The belt is not working properly if it is not properly tensioned.
It says right in the maual that "Seat Belts that fail to function properly are covered for the useful life of the car." Therefore, if they are not rolling back up as they should, it should be warranteed. It actually has nothing to do with a recall.

Exactly. But some dealerships still won't do the work no matter what. Depends on the quality of your dealership, and how much you want to press the issue.
I'm always amazed that people unbuckle their belts - i've had mine for 9 years, and have always kept it buckled. Plus, since they don't retract very well, it deters that nasty dent in the door panel from the seatbelt tab that everyone's car has.

I thought Honda only replaced the belts if they no longer lock to restrain the person during operation(i.e. during extreme braking).

I had no idea the belt should be buckled at all times. Weird, I feel like a dumbass now but it makes sense.

If they dont properly go back into place they must replace them.
I have had honda replace belts for me.
They said if they dont properly retract they must be replaced.
I would report him to the honda main office.
A buddy of mine was in a accident with his crx a few months ago with the "loose" seatbelts the dont retract and he ended up hitting the window and getting knocked out due to seatbelt failure.

dang. does that work for 88-89 cars also, b/c when i unbuckle they don't retract all the way. I already replaced the drivers side one from a junkyard and its gotten as bad as the old one has.

FREE of charge??
I've never heard of leaving the belts buckled at all times either
Thats crazy.
I just wanna go out and try it right now!!

what the dealer said is very true. its a method of "passive restraint", such as automatic motorized shoulder belts, and airbags. in 88, congress passed a bill mandating certain percentages of cars manufactered by each manufacturer to include some kind of passive restraint. only the more expensive cars got airbags at the time until manufacturers decided "safety sells" and included airbags in more cars and even passed new law making airbags required including passenger side. anyway, so this explains why 88's got away without having to deal with the door mounted seat belt crap and the rest of the world didnt either.

You know that makes sense on how your suppose to keep them buckled. I think people dont realize it cause they would unbuckle in the normal location unlike most of them how if they were suppose to stay buckled they would unbuckle by the door and not by the parking brake. Like my Corolla Wagon it has the belts that unbuckle by the door now granted you have to unbuckle the lap belt since they arent attached but same concept just different locations.
yes, if you have a 90-91 CRX with door mounted seat belts, they are considered to be "automatic seat blet". But, if they go wrong at anytime of the car is on the road, the dealer should replace it for free. I had this done 2 years ago when my 90 DX seat bels decided not to retract at all, there's nothing to do with the buckle warrenty.
Also, you can call up your insurance comany and tell them that you have automatic seat betls in your car so your premium would be lower a little bit.

FREE of charge...that's what I want to know....
The previous owner of my '91 LX CUT the passive seatbelt cuz he didn't want to have it fixed. The belt retracts when I open the door...meaning it goes closer to the windshield, but DOES NOT go back to the B pillar when I close the door.

There's (2) issues here:
1: The release buckles cracking (Covered by recall -ALL seat belt components covered by Lifetime warranty -NO time limit)
2: Seat belt webbing being caught in the door due to "lazy" retractors (A "known"problem, don't know if there is a recall per-say, but Honda will replace the seat belt webbing /retractors assemblies IF you show "concern" about the fact the webbing could be "weakened" by being slammed in the door due to lazy retractors) ALL seat belt components are covered by Lifetime warranty -NO time limit.
Here's the deal.. IF the red button on the seat belt buckle (near the parking brake) is broken or cracked they will replace it. Note there are (2) different types (Manufacturers) One type is prone to cracking, the other evidently is not. You need to verify which your car has.
What I'd do is go by the dealership without the car.. (Know is sounds strange.. the reason is you want to verify which bucket assembly you have prior to inspection by the dealer... In other words you want to be sure the parts are "breaking"... so they install new buckle assemblies.)
Step 1: Get a copy of the recall info... and see which buckle assemblies you have.
2: Then I'd make SURE the RED bucket release button IS "cracked" or "cracking"... (Otherwise they will just install a "guide"... and NOT replace the whole buckle assembly.)
3: Drive car by dealership with "cracked" buckle release button. Dealer will verify... and order NEW buckle assemblies.
When I took my wife's car in I talked to the shop foreman about the fact the seat belt retractors in the doors had been "lazy" for several years... That I was VERY concerned about the seat belt "webbing" being damaged from being slammed in the door over the years...
What he did was to order both L, and R buckle assemblies, PLUS Both Seat belt /retractors assemblies... Had them install buckles... (Told them NOT to use AIR-Tools... When I went out in the shop a "kid" was installing the new buckles with air-tools... He cross-threaded one of the bolts, plus broke several of the plastic trim pieces. ERRRR.)
The seat belt retractor assemblies had to be ordered... When the parts came in I went by and picked up the parts and installed the seat-belt retractor assemblies myself.
PS: The shop manual says to replace ANY Torx head bolt that is un-installed... I made the dealer order those bolts as well... (The shop Forman admitted they NEVER replace those bolts! He said he had never seen were Honda says to replace the bolts.... I then referred him to my handy-dandy Honda Factory shop manual which said ALL bolts should not be re-used.. He then ordered those as well)
So in the end I got both L&R seta belt release assemblies.. and both L&R seat belt assemblies complete with retractors.. All under warranty (As it should be) For a total cost of my gas, and time.

Damned that ******! I might like to drive around w/ stock belts...but NOO, I have to shell out more ******* money! Probably needs new motor (the one that moves it back and forth) or something, also needs the assembly that attaches to the seat itself. Maybe I shouldn't have bought this one...gggrrrr

Great Write Up Alan on your experience. Honda Motor Company would be FOOLISH to deny warranty work, ESPECIALLY ON SEATBELTS!!! Just one incident proved against due to faulty seatbelts restraints can cost them alot in legal fees. Years ago, I actually got a RECALL notice from HONDA in regards to my seatbelts in my 89 Prelude SI. A buddy of mine at the time had a 91 Civic Hatchback and got his seatbelts done under warranty free of charge. He didnt even get a recall notice. He took his in after he heard about the RECALL notice Honda sent me for my Prelude.
Your right ALAN, all they did was put "guides" in his buckles. The dealership took care of him. I never brought my Prelude to have it done till this day. Its a retired "show car" that sees little mileage per year. But at least I know, I can in the future if I want. I dont really have issues with the belts in my Prelude retracting, but I know sometimes the passenger seatbelt gets stuck in the buckle.
On my 90 ITR engined CRX HF, I converted to some "88" doors I had around. They are much lighter and dont have all that Passive seatbelt crap.
But on the flip side, its hard to reach over for something to grab and move around when you are strapped in with a Sparco 3 point harness
