I have a B18c1 shortblock im building with CP 9:1 pistons and some eagle rods...Anyways ive been researching alot about blockguards. i understand how they work, pros/cons of them etc, I just want to see if you guys making high HP on stock sleeves are using them

 

i never used a blockgaurd.

 

Bump anyone else? I'd prefer to keep it simple and go without one....the install scares me more than the overheating, etc, issues...

I'll be using a STR block guard. Looks a little different than the rest. I'll be posting results soon

 

I had mine installed when the machine work was done to the block...The machinest said he had to heat the block to 600+ degrees and press it in. Then had to bore .003 more off where the guard was to make it all even...I have 10.5:1 compression with 7psi (for now)...runs fine with mild tuning. And stock sleeves. Ill let you know as it goes...

 

i want to try to keep it as simple as possible and avoid boring, etc...think im just gonna get it honed and throw the pistons/rods in and try my luck without the block guard

i have block gaurd "str" and so far its fine no over heating or anything and im going for 400+ whp in january when st00pid gets back from vacation so ill let you know the #s when i get them

Sorry for the dumb question, but what is a block guard.

 

block guard is a peice of metal that will fit around the cylinder walls to keep them from exploding out.

Jesse, just go for it, 400whp you should be ok, if not, we rip it out and sleeve it

 

511whp 361 tq -- stock 96 Ls b18b1, stock sleeves, no block guard no posts no threaded inserts, just rods and pistons in a motor

i had a customer's b16 with posts crack a sleeve at 7 psi on a 54 trim t04e. please dont post the block

I believe it's a way to prevent the sleeves from shifting. Posting involves drilling holes in the block, all the way through the coolant jacket. Then thread a bolt through that hole so that it rests on the outside of the cylinder walls, normally near the middle/top portion of the cylinder walls. Like I said, to prevent cylinders from shifting, which can lead to cracked walls.

I say spend the extra $$$ on a good standalone and HOURS of tuning on the dyno.

 

drill a bunch of holes around the sleeve, and ram a bunch of aluminum between the sleve and the water jacket. it sort of looks like a golden eagle godzilla sleeve, with each tab going around the sleeve.

in actuality, all it does is create a stress riser at each dowel and *significantly* weaken an already fragile cylinder

 

Geoff's right. Please don't ever post your block.

Stock sleeve's swell under boost, period. You can't get around that. When you post a block, all it does is keep the sleeve from swelling where the post is, and the cracks form prematurely around the post - which is where Geoff's posted B16 cracked it's sleeves. right?

Also, you need to know that a blockguard does not keep the stock sleeves from expanding. They are meant to stabilize the tops of the bores with the express purpose of keeping the sleeves from shifting around and blowing headgaskets. Why do sleeves shift? Detonation. So if the headgasket can't let go to preserve your engine, the sleeves do.

Personally, I'd rather replace a headgasket than a whole engine. Keep in mind that at 2 to 3 times stock power output, when you blow a headgasket on a stock block there is a pretty good chance a bunch of other stuff will go with it in one big fat trainwreck, but if you can get away with just a headgasket replacement by not getting overly complicated
