Would you trade - ITR for 94 RX7 TT?
awwww man ..... all I wanted to do was sell my car so I can put more money down on a house. I was given an offer which is very tempting.
The person offered to trade his RX7 TT plus 3000 bux for my 1998 ITR with 66,000 miles.
The RX7 has 46,000 original miles and runs great! The interior is decent, expected wear on the leather.
Color is white .... fresh new coat of paint ($3500 paint job)
Thats all I know right now.......... should I look into this alittle further or just abandon the whole idea?

If it were me I wouldn't do it. My dad always told me never trade a used car for a used car because you never know what you are getting in a used car. At least with the ITR you are aware of any problems with the car. You could get the RX7 and end up having lots of maintenace problems. This is just my opinion so it doesn't count.
FD's are sweet cars, but the maintenance and reliability with them is terrible. The TT 13B rotary engines usually need a complete overhaul every 60 - 80K miles and if they have been modified, they might not last that long. That car has alot of cooling problems, and unless they have been addressed (via larger radiator, additionnal fans, vents, etc.) then they won't last very long for track use. I would be very careful when considering purchasing or trading for one...

I'd avoid rotary engines. My ex-girlfriend used to have an old RX-7, that thing never ******* ran more than a week without breaking down.
As much as I like the RX7...

Sounds like a bargain! I would be abit cautious tho because of this. FDs are known for their reliability issues and especially if its 2nd hand you just don;t know the full history of it. You know you can drive the pants off the ITR and nothing will happen to it
I agree with the other guys. Sell the R and get a house. The house will appreciate in value, the FD won't. I also have a FD and as long as you don't go buck wild on the mods, it's a fairly reliable car. It's always going to be faster in everyway than the ITR. The problem with it is that it guzzles gas and you can't carry anything in it, which makes it a bad daily driver.
Take the FD, but before you do. Get it checked out. The turbos are known to go bad early. Also check the vaccum lines. Just check all the little lines go everywhere. I have seen those go bad with lest that 5k on the car.
rotaries can be very nice if you know how to maintain them , finding one that was maintained correctly is a chore. i had one that was a headache a few years ago , but the guy ripped us off and we took that **** back .
id be more concerned as to why he's willing to offer you soo much for your R? if i had the choice i would take an RX7 over and R anytime, as long as it was a kopesetic deal

Well as far as $ you may be coming ahead, here in dallas an FD with that amount of original miles would sell for about $18-19k, and hes giving you 3k+, obviously your coming ahead $ wise, but..... theres always buts
My friend has one (gsrsol) its ******* beautiful, fast, running low 12's on stock twins, but unfortunately hes on his 3rd motor in like 2 years, bad news last night, he thinks the newest motor (3-4 months old) is gone. He takes good care of the car, doesnt rag on it, races occasionally, but bottom line is they are to sensitive. They are very high maintenece, parts arent cheap, and they are more difficult to work on than the ITR.
These are just some things you should now because this is a big desicion, and you dont want to overlook anything. Bny all means you shoudl alos purchase a daily driver as well.
Bad news is my friend is going to move on to a new project because he cant afford to keep replacing the motor

The RX-7 is one of the least reliable cars on the road. In order to get the same reliability as you get from your R, you would probably have to spend somewhere in the neighborhood or $8000.
I'd say if you already have a beater (or any car) to drive outside of your ITR already then think about it... you'll need something to drive when it's in the shop, outside that I'm not too sure how wise it is.
Not to knock on FD's, they'd eat us for lunch, but that is when they are running properly
But atleast it is a '94 FD, which has some of the fixes that the '93s had problems with... the best would be a '95 FD with all recalls and TSBs done.
Best case scenario... stock ITR and FD as your play around car....
But I'd be asking him... why are you trading down? (In terms of performance, not overall...
)

i think you need to talk to the member here named knightsport. i wanna say thats him, but he seems to know a lot about rx7's. I heard the best thing you can do for that car is replace the coolant hoses and make sure the system is all in check.
RX7 tt would be nice to have with that low of mileage but i
Honda's. I'm not really a fan of that rotory engine bullshit anyway. Just my thoughts.

*IF* you have the car checked out by a *good* Rotary/FD-familiar shop and it checks out ok...... with the correct Mazda factory compression tester...
*IF* you keep the cash in the bank just in case.....
*IF* you address the 'issues' with the car (cooling)
*IF* you are willing to go standalone with your engine management if you modify the car (not a bad way to spend $10,000! har har... )
*IF* you are willing to spend the extra money on maintenance (fuel filters are a bitch, for one, and absolutely must be replaced)
Then i'd do it........... they are fantstic machines.
Riding in a 600 hp FD on hoosiers @ VIR is a... unique experience

If you can put up with all those 'if's?" then do it, otherwise I would say no. I have been through a similar predicament in wanting to pick up either an E30 M3 or an '88 911 Turbo, both in pristine condition with low mileage, but the if's regardsing costs of repairs and manitenace were too much for me.

I wouldn't do it. I thought the idea behind selling the R was to get a house? As mentioned above, the maintenance on this particular car will be costly, and could be a nightmare. Think about your future and invest in the house..
If you get an FD3S and hope for good reliability as well as decent performance, plan on the following:
1. Apex seals at least 2 mm if you plan on abusing it.
2. The entire cooling system will be upgraded. Not just a radiator or a fan, but everything.
3. Switch to a single turbo system. Doing this eliminates the seemingly hundreds of vacuum lines that are all very prone to leaking and cracking. When one of these lines goes bad, you have to rebuild the whole system.
4. Paint fade was a problem on the earlier models so a new paint job may be in the workings.
Personally I'd just get a Porsche 930 (early 911 Turbo) if I had my heart set on trading, but if not, then just keep the R.
