Default The Death of #01-226 - November 9th, 2003 :( *Details Inside, Lots of Pics*

Thats right, 01-0226 is a total loss. All started 2 weeks ago, Sunday, November 9th 2003. Last Auto-X of the season in the River Cities region in Ashland, KY. Chris and I are an hour + from home. Day started out great, nice and sunny, and not too cool.

We meet Erik95Ls halfway there. We all arrive safe and sound. We get resgistered, get the cars teched, and start sweeping the tiny pebbles that cover the entire lot and walk the course. The lot we use is very large, and courses are always fast. Everything is ready to go! Im the 5th car to run in group 1 of 2 groups of 6. We normally get about 8 runs due to small crowds.

My second run, get through the course, very smooth and feels great; Aside from no PS around the 180 turnaround
End of the course is a slalom, once again, very fast! Going through the slalom what feels like perfect. Get to the end of it, in 2nd gear at about 9grand. :Thinks to myself: Shift, or ride it out? What do I do, I shift into third. Was on the throttle for a second or two. Thru the timing lights. I lift, tap the brake and barely nudged the wheel to avoid the last pylon. ...as many horror stories ive seen on here from lifting... on me *Note the last pylon in the picture, that did it.

From there was chaos. Here I am sliding sideways thinking no big deal, Ill just ride it out sideways. Then I see the guard rail comming towards me faster and faster and Im not slowing down. Well, at the very last second, the car comes all the way around and BAM. Smashed into the guard rail. Went airborn and landed at a 45 degree angle to the guard rail. Start sliding down the hill in the damp grass towards the river. First thing I did- Shut the car off, get out and see the damage. I was freaking as some of you would expect.

I came out unscathed, just a sore neck for a few days. The 5point Sparco camlocks held me in the seat nice and snug the whole time. My head was rested against the rest the whole time. The rollbar held the rear of the car from comming in any further than it did. Stopped at the backseats. Car is trashed!

Bell Sport III, Sparco 5-points, and AP Rollbar = wise investment!

At first, insurance estimated $12k worth damage, which wasnt a total. Took it to a body shop hoping they would find me and total it. Shop wants to find used parts at a salvage yard to cut down on the estimate so they can fix it
We finally got another insurance adjuster to come out and do another estimate with a few parts they left out i.e. driver seat, rear seats, taillights, etc.

Called them today, great news. Its a total loss! :sigh of relief:
I didnt want the car to be repaired, it wouldnt be the same
Im awaiting the check, pay it off and buy it back.
Either A: Buy an EK, swap everything over, or B) Part out and buy another R..... desicions decisions....

Anyway, enough rambling, here are pics :

Look how lonely #442 is already without her sister. x 10

HUGE thanks to Chris93Si for everything you did for me!

Oh yea, Erik95ls, thanks for offering the trailor and everything.

Oh yea, Steve, Ill let you know asap about the motor.
Everyone else, please dont send IM's asking for parts.

Thanks for the space and time.

I was wondering when this post would come up

So sad to see 226 hurt but equally happy that you weren't hurt! It's a relief to know the car is being totalled and in the meantime your always welcome to take 442 for a spin.

442 sad for losing a friend, Chris93Si happy for not losing a friend

The most important thing is that you are fine and healthy.

Harnesses and Rollbar and of course Helmet are extremely wise investments.

The car is a total loss which is a sigh of relief. Good for you to stick it out and have them settle the way you did.

Buy it back and build a hatch, ABSOLUTLEY! And then buy another R if you want to or a newer car, H'mmm EVO8 or STI or S2K.

Coming from someone who has been there and did that, As long as you are alright that is what counts. Cars are metal and are replaceable.

Now how did you place? Gotta keep it light, cause your heart was most likely racing as fast as a bunny after it all happened and looks like it will all work out. Just be ready for your rates to climb for a bit.

damn.. good thing they're not going to repair that..

i suggest to swap eveyrthing into civic hatch or integra shell, i've seen a couple itr shells listed on here - but.. might not be that cheap.. you went from gsr to itr.. - you gotta decide if its worth getting another one or just building one from shell..

You're lucky your policy covers racing. Here in BC insurance covers none of that. Even DE events are at your own risk.

Damn guardrails! Mine were gone by it too, just that I was on a road course than autox. People always have a hard time believing me that sliding and spinning around autox is not a ok thing to do. After I witnessed several horrable accidents in autox that resulted in total-losses, I now always have my clutch and brake all the way to the floor if my first attempt to save the car fails.

Helping you to decide....look at my sig But once in a while, especially after ECHC races, I always regret my decision.

P.S....you sure were lucky, autox is a timed event, which would be considered racing.

Never thought this would have happened to me. Especially at an auto-x. I went 2 feet in and did my best to save it...

Thanks for the support everyone.
