just got car back from shop...b16 swap into 88 crx....help!
ok...so i finally got my car back from the shop after about 3 weeks. i have a couple questions tho. first thing i noticed was the letters stamped on the block...B16A3...and i don't know why he used a obd-1 usdm motor when i thought he was going with the 1st gen B16 motor to keep it non-obd. so what exactly did he have to change? the wiring harness or did he just have to run all the obd-1 sensors? also...is there any way to tell what year EXACTLY my del sol b16 is? i know the A3's were from 94-97 right? so 94 would still be obd-1 and anything up would be 2 right? also...what ecu would he run? could he still use the PR-3 or PW0 ecu's? i don't konw...but i would of liked to of got the 1st gen B16 into my crx...would there be any dis-advantage with this b16? sorry to sound all stupid...its just that i heard if you don't run the right senors and all that with that year obdwhatever motor it is...the motor won't run to its potential? so i would of thought the guy doing my swap would of kept it simple and kept it non-obd. oh well...oh and last thing...it came with a ys-1 tranny...is that the jdm tranny? ok well thanks for any help...

so they went through all that trouble to put the b16a3 in your car rather than going with the cheaper/easier swap?...sounds kinda fishy
to me. if u dont mind me askin.... how much did u pay? how does it run?

yea thats what i'm saying. well the car runs fine. he was saying "i replaced the rings and bearings" (or something like that) "because u never know what these used engines went thru"...so he kind of did a semi-rebuild. he did tell me that is was the last engine the place had so maybe thats why he had to use the a3 motor? hmmmm one thing...the check engine light does come on WHEN i plug back in the plug for the reverse lights and i'm thinking it could be a bad switch of some sort? he told me the code it was throwing was a coolant sensor or something but i will double check that in the morning to make sure that is the code. oh yeah i paid $2500 for the swap.....
oh yeah...one more thing...i couldn't take the car on full WOT because i have to let the motor break in(new rings, bearings, seals) so yeah...give me a week and i'll go on full wot and tell ya how it really feels haha.
one more question.....he used the jdm ys1 tranny and is that a direct bolt up to the B16A3...cause don't the del sol b16 motors use hydro trannies? so would he have to use a hydro to cable tranny kit for the hydro b16a3 to bolt up to a cable tranny ys1? or no cause my car is already a cable tranny car? and about the distributor....since my car is non-obd...and now he is using either a obd-1 or 2 motor....with distributor did he use? is there anyway to tell? or can you not use a JDM b16 distributor with a usdm motor? ok well thanks for any help guys....
You can still keep a b16a3 obd-0 by using a jdm obd-0 b16a distributor and injectors. If he kept the motor pre obd he most likely used a pw0 ecu or pr3 ecu for your swap. As for the tranny you can bolt up any b series tranny to any b series motor...if you would like to use a hydro tranny you will have to purchase a hasport cable to hydro conversion kit. reminder most b series parts are interchangeable
#1) Find the ECU. Take it out, and look at the codes on the Bar code... it'll say PW0, PR3, P28... etc. You'd have to use the conversion mounts to run a hydro, and the Ys1 is just fine. Also, I'd ask him where he got the motor... sounds like he could've had one with 190k miles on it laying around and put it in your car. Something is strange about this... good price though... but awfully strange.

I second that. But doesn't it have to be installed w/ OBD-1 sensors and ECU(i.e., full OBD0->1 conversion) to be smogable?

cool thanks for all the replies. yea thats what i'm thinking...at least i could "legally" smog it now since it is a usdm motor. i'll be looking at the ecu in a little bit...after some breakfest.
oh yeah...another little plus outta this is that instead of having a second o2 bung welded into any aftermarket header i buy, i can now just get an aftermarket header without doing any of that(since its not a jdm b16)...nothing big...but less hassle i guess?

OBD 1 is better because now you can run a burned chip in it if you wanted. The OBD 1 just has more detail in diagnosing, if a problem ever comes up. The shop would had to use all OBD1 conversion and would not be able to use any OBD 0 parts.
The alternator is OBD1 and everything should be fine, that's a great price for what you were handed. plus the A3 motor has more HP then a 1st gen OBD0 motor.
Lots of positives no negatives.

It does?
It does?
Sounds like you did ok with your swap. If you got a ys1 tranny, that came from 3 different cars:
92-93 Integra rs,ls,gs models
92-93 Integra GSR- gears similar to type r
92-93 JDM version some with lsd-Intergra i think
Oh, and all of those trannies were cable.

oh god....some of my fears came true just now....so i went to drop off my sisters baby about 10 min. away from my house. on the way back...i went on semi-wot...punched it a lil. came home...looked under the car...and low and behold...oil dripping. i continued to look and it seems to be coming from the seal where the driver side axel meets the tranny casing. but it also is on the oil pan bolt, and the shifter bar where that meets the tranny. im going to clean out my garage and put the car inside...and do a total run down and see exactly where it is coming from. also check the spark plugs and do a compression test and all that good stuff. one more thing...he gave me an extra starter because he said one time he was having trouble starting the car...and i thought it was the ground because he didn't put the ground for the battery back how i had it originally, he had it just hanging there. so i put it back in...and it started fine. well i was just at the gas station and it didn't wanna start...sounded like the starter was grinding or something. so i guess i'll be putting in the new one as well....he said it was just 2 bolts...is it that simple? ok well i'll keep ya'll updated. thanks for all the help and replies.......
yea...the swap is pretty clean. i'll post up some pics later today when my friend brings over his digi-cam. i'm just hoping that he didn't just use a high-milaged del sol motor or something. but from the oil leakage...i don't know. oh yeah...also i started it up today...and i put it in reverse..and the car died? hmmm...so i left the plug for the reverse lights(yellow connector right near tranny in engine bay) dis-connected and its fine now. he told me when he plugged it in...the check engine like would come on so thats why he left in unplugged. i don't know...guess i'll check the code.
what ecu are u running. like brother ^ said!!
if your running a P30, pR3, P28, P72 those are OBD1.
first thing u do is check the ECU to see what OBD your running.
then check the dizzy does it have two plug or one what color are the plugs?
Also what color are the wires on the injectors and does it still have the injector resistor box?
Also if you have long gears your fucked and have a LS tranny. B16a first gears go like 35-40 Miles Per Hour.
Also the leak is common change the seals and you shouldn't have a leak any more. You should push the car a full throttle see if everything is working right It might throw check engine light if it cant run RIGHT!!!!
hope this helps a little

look here it shows all Ys1 trannies USDM OR JDM as 4.40 gears which is 2nd best gearing for acceleration. JDM Type R trannies are the best 4.78
