Default HELP !! What is this thick sludge gunk buildup crap in my head <pics> !!!!!!

I just did an oil change on my friends car from regular to synthetic and poped the valve cover to just see if everything was ok and this is what we saw... Can someone please tell me whats wrong. (We havn't ran his car yet after switching to synthetic) Specs:

D16Z6
115,000 KM's
Regular 10W30

Most of the crap is on the exhaust side of the head. Cylinder #3 has the least amount of slug on the valves and ****.

The last oil change was done at a honda dealership and it was about 4500km's ago (recommended is 5000km's).

The thick sludge is the stuff that was stored in the oil filter. Your friend obviously did not change the oil since the car rolled out of the showroom. What happened is that the oilfilter can only hold that much ****, and eventually the bypass valve opens when the restriction is excessive, and wham.

Dont panic. Scrape up as much as you can then, use a paint brush and some kerosene and wash the **** down the sump. Then drain out the sump and flush with cleane engine oil.

I have seen this before, in this same engine...not that it means anything. I would recommend running some thin stuff through there 0w30 or something. Try and clean out some gunk if you can.

Holy ****! i have never in my life seen a honda engine that was neglected to that extent. And damn, im at the junkyard ALL the time. Ive never seen a junkyard motor half as bad as that!!

But one thing, definatly DO NOT USE ENGINE FLUSH in that motor.
At least not right away anyhow.
Just clean it up and do a ton of oil changes using lighter weight oil like was
suggested. That thing is so bad that running engine flush would almost definatly
dislodge too much of that **** at once, which stands a chance of clogging one
or more oil channels.

That's why I posted it on here, I knew once I popped his valve cover that I needed to take pics and post it on here so more ppl can see this crazy ****. My friend bought the car with about 100,000km's on it from a Honda Dealership. And now it has 115,000km's on it and he has takin' it to Honda for oil changes at 105,000km and 110,000km. The he decided to put synthetic in there and change the tranny fluid, so he came to my place to learn how to do it him self. We did the oil change and filter change (BTW the old filter was a Honda filter). We only took the valve cover off because he wanted to clean it up and then we saw this ****.

Anyways, we carefully picked up as much of the crap we could get our fingers on and cleaned up the inside of the valve cover. After that we drained the new oil we put in there and poured new oil all over the head to send the rest of the crap to the oil pan. After that we used a solvent with a brush to get all the tight spots clean. That worked really well. All the solvent dripped into the oil pan (total of half a cup). Then we poured more oil all over the head and drained everything out again. Here comes the interesting part... we called my friends mechanic and he wasn't too worried after we told him what we saw. He told us to put 3quarts of the synthetic oil back in and 1/2 a quart of ATF because it has alot of detergents in it. So with all that done we fired her up and waited for it to warm up to operating temp and took the car for a run to get it nice and hot to melt the rest of the **** off. He's gonna run it for a week and come back to change the oil and filter again. Hopefully everything will be fine next week.

could be blowby past the exhaust valve stem seals maybe as well.

To clean it up a little....a little gasoline can do wonders.

On older cars, I always would just poor over the valvetrain(serious), and let it go right through the oil drain plug. This cleans out a LOT of gunk in the head and oil pan and oil alleys. Any left over gas just vaporizes and goes through the PCV valve

hold on ther chief......come with factual data, not just hear say. We (hondatech) prides itself on bringing actual technical information into discussion. Any info is appriciated, dont get me wrong, but with statements such as this, please try and bring some documented information to support such a claim.

Thanks for posting

Sludge in the engines is not unheard of.I had the same problem with engines that come from japan. What I have found out that works is try doing an oil change but instead of 4quarts try 3 of engine oil and one of honda auto tranny fluid.Think I am carzy I bet ya do but atf fluid is a detergent and cleans so this would remove some if not all of the sludge..The only downside to this is that the sludge has to go somewhere meaning the rocker arms can get a bit sticky.....If not take the head off and have it hot tanked......just my$0.02 good luck

Dog Chit smeared all up in the head!!!

I heard some engine additives do this-without following frequent oil changes with them, they turn into doodoo

Wow, is that bad... You might want to try running some sea foam in there.

The classic sludge motor. Most of the sludge collects on the head because of the heat. That **** used to be the motor oil, but it got broken down so much that it turned into that mess. This is a lesson to all the people who don't change the oil. Good luck with that, hopefully the bearings did'nt get damaged too much.

the underside of my oil cap on my beater vw fox looked kinda like that. it was a combination of never changing the oil and leaking a little coolant- might as well take that head off and get it hot tanked. it will do wonders-
