Basically, winter tires fall into two categories:

1. Tires that do the absolute best on ice and snow, while their highway ride characteristics are okay not great. Tires that fall into this category are the Michelin Arctic Alpin and the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50. They generally run around $80/tire (USD).

2. Tires that do okay on ice and snow and are designed to have better ride characteristics on the highway. These include the Michelin Pilot Alpin and the Bridgestone Blizzak LM-22. They generally run around $110/tire (USD).

Folks who live in areas that have a fairly mild winter might want to consider category (2) tires. Those who live in Chicago, Boston, and Toronto might want to optimize for the most slippery conditions and get those in category (1).

All of these tires are available in the stock ITR size of 195/55-15.

Cliff's Notes version for those in Canada: Get the Michelin Arctic Alpin or the Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50.

The stock size is 195/55-15 and the major winter tires are available in that size.

As I already noted above.

Get the Blizzak LM22s

195/55/15.

Great in the snow and they handle suprisingly well in the dry. In my opinion, perfect for the winter-driven R.
