Default 6pt harness question

I thought the point of 6-point harnesses was to loop under the driver's thighs and attach at the lap belt points. However, I see most people attaching them to the floor in front of the driver like a 5-point. This seems like it'd be just as safe, if not safer, but was I wrong? I've seen some discussion that seemed to indicate that attaching the anti-sub at the lap belt points is safest in a sports racer or open wheel car with a reclined seating position and not really intended for sedans. Considering the thin webbing of the anti-sub straps I don't think it'd put significant additional load on the mounting hardware, but would they be effective mounted like that if you were sitting upright?

Backstory: I bought some nice Sparco cam-lock harnesses (two sets) dirt cheap from someone who bought them and never used them. One of them has a single anti-sub belt (5pt), one of them is missing the anti-sub belt. Obviously I would not use them without an anti-sub belt, and roll bar, so don't worry about that. However, I would like to use them with seats that have no anti-sub belt hole, and my sewing skills being what they are, I'd rather not cut the seat. Routing the strap down over the front of the seat is obviously out of the question. Since I need to buy at least one anti-sub belt to replace the missing one, 6-points seem to be the answer. The use of this car will be HPDE, lapping, and autocross, no racing.

I attached the 2-point sub belt to the rear seat rail mounting bolts, running it outside the seat hinges and adjusting it so it would hold the lap belt down tight when I sat on it. Running it around the outside makes sure that the straps are angled to the sides enough to not pinch your naughty bits.

I would advise strongly against wrapping it around the front of your seat. The purpose of the strap is to keep you from sliding forward, if you run the strap around the front it will not be doing its job.

We get customers doing this all the time and it drives me nuts. The proper way is around the sides of the seat and under your legs, or get a racing seat with an anti-sub strap pass through.
