Not FI specific, but either way I hate paying machine shops for monkeywork labor just because I don't have the right tools. So with $20 in materials from Home Depot and a little cutting, drilling and welding, I have a valve spring compressor. It is even adjustable for use while the head is still in the car (base mounts to head instead of bench/board). I always love seeing people's creations so I thought I'd post one of mine

Heres what I had to do when I popped a couple keeps out of my LS head (and didn't have a valve spring compresssor to get them back in)

that is great! making tools is really fun, especially if they work well. that looks just as good as my 120 dollar matco one, if not better

the adjustable wrench is pretty trick too

 

I just bought one from northern tool. It looks the same as a snap-on one.

 

I just used a flat head screwdriver

 

Lol thanks guys.... looks like there are a few other creative methods out there The compliments are appreciated - I was originally just going to build something for the sake of welding practice, then I ran out of argon shortly after tacking it together .

Damn man! Nice work. We had to become innovative as well when trying to put the EF-1 valvetrain in my b16 while still in the car. Anyone who has installed these things realizes what i mean, They are by far the stiffest springs i've ever felt! We ended up w/ this two piece, 3 man tool, yes, three people, one leaning heavily on each end of the big bar and one to put the keepers in.




worked well! I'd love something like the one you made, i might have to fab something up like that now that i have to redo the valvetrain cause for some reason I managed to pop the head of a valve off within minutes of doing the job, smashed into the head and piston, no good, only got two good pulls to only 7800rpms w/ the crower stage 2 cams then it happened.! I just hope that it's not because the springs are too stiff, I can't image the force it takes to pop a head clean off!

Be careful with that 3-man tool!! You don't want to overcompress the springs or they will become distorted and not function as intenteded!!!


Nice homemade tools, but i'll keep using my Snap-on to keep the headaches to a minimum!
