Default D-series piston swap experiences "Info greatly appreciated"

Sup fellas, I'm still debating on weather to use pm3's (d15b7) or pm6 (d16a6) pistons in my d16z6 block. I was thinking about the pm7's or p29's as well, but with the pump gas here in cali (91 octane) I think I would only run into more problems due to the high compression (13.6:1). I just want to know from anybody who has done this swap before, weather it worked out for you, or only caused headaches. Which setup would be a more reliable setup for being a n/a daily driven?

*updated edit* will be using a6 pistons w/ shotpeened z6 rods

the d-series compression calculator should help greatly, if you dont already have access to it...

http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm

z6 block, z6 pistons...9.13cr
z6 block, a6 pistons...10.4cr
z6 block, b7 pistons...11.2cr
z6 block, pm7/p29 pistons....13.6cr

(piston-deck height and headgasket are oem z6)

to asnwer your question if you wanted a more reliable N/A cause of our crap 91 octane gas in Cali.....i would go with the B7 pistons...

you could proably get away with about 12 - 12.5 if you tune it good on our gas....but 13.6 is high

I ran p29 pistons for awhile.

Pulled hard and revved quick, but I had to pull too much timing....would rather have B7 or A6 at stock timing

So.... Nobody out there actually done the b7 or a6 pistons swap into a z6 block? Bump

yes, i would like to know the same... which rods were used? any strengthening of the rotating assembly? b7 pistons aren't known to be the strongest

also, piston-deck height changes with the difference of pistons right? doesn't the b7 piston sit under the hole with the z6 block?

Well, I'm doing ANOTHER SOHC build up for member "Elwood" AKA D15Dude on this board. Using B7 pistons in that mug. Should turn out really nice. I'll take some pics maybe as I'm waiting to order the pistons

Can someone clarify this for me? I dont want to put b7's in if they will sit below TDC.

B7's have a 3mm lower pin location and will sit OUTSIDE the hole by 2.5-2.75 mm.

This means they will smack the head nicely.

Thanks for the clarification Mista Bone. That would mean that this (http://www.knology.net/~jediklc/D.htm) compression calculation website is inaccurate. So in this case, what would be the best piston for me to use? b7's are out of the question

I ran PM6 pistons in my Y7 for about a year, now I will be running a Y8 head, and A1 pistons

P29's (D16A1) are the best pistons you can run for an NA D16Z6 (they put ur compression in the 12's)...I wouldnt recommend them for FI or N20 though...AT ALL...

to my understanding it's that the B7 rod is 3mm shorter than the Z6,A6, and A1.

Seems like everybody so far is making me lean towards a1 pistons. But the other issue that hasn't been clarified is, weather or not I would be able to run that high comp. combo on CA pumped gas (91 octane)? Anybody in cali with this setup?

Go with the A6 pistons.

That'll put you around 11:1 which is plenty safe for 91 octane.

With the p29s, and 91 octane, you'll have to pull out so much timing, it will basically be counterproductive.

yeah, basically what Emerika was sayin above.
OK... so now that I'm going to be using a6 pistons, I have a set of LS rods laying around as well. Has anybody used LS rods with this combo, or simular combo? I know I will have to grind parts of the block to have the beefier rods clear, but im still lost in this whole brushkit thing having to do with the LS rods.

the D15 blocks are shorter also.

NICE that about clears up this topic. thanks fellas... I guess I'm just gonna shotpeen my stock rods, since ls rods would only contribute to more problems.
