b20 Strength of Sleeves.
Kind of stuck with what kind of motor I want to build for my CRX...I want at least 200 to the wheels and be daily driven. Thinking about going with the b20vtec but I have a few things I want to know about it. My concerns are in the strength of the sleeves. Has anyone have any problems with the sleeves cracking or anything like that. I would be rebuilding the block with eagle crower rods and je pistons with a 10.5:1 compression with stock bore.
naturally aspirated you probably wont have a problem, if you decide to boost you should at the very least get a block guard.
the b20 sleeves are individual instead of connected like all other b series motors, hence the weakness.
IMO i wouldnt even waste time with a b20vtec. history has shown they are very unreliable.

I would not be boosting the motor...it would be strictly all motor. I don't doubt that they are unreliable but I do think that they are more reliable if you build it right. Just trying to get as much info about this swap before I decide to start it...
building it for reliability would involve destroking it.
just keep that in mind. the b20vtec is an amazing motor but not reliable. the money would be better spent elsewhere.

IMO... if you want a B20/Vtec... go for it.
Get some 11 & a half to 1 aftermarket pistons & make sure they are balanced along w/ the rods. Get some ARP rod bolts. Get a nice headgasket & make sure you copper coat it.
Choose your cams & cam gears.
You will be able to make 200 easy & @ least 145 tq w/ good tuning.
As far as reliability of B20/Vtecs... high compression (Im thinking 12 to 1 or more) wouldnt be that reliable.
I have a stock bottomend B20 w/ b16a head & CTR cams that I have beat the POOP out of for over 40k miles not to mention what the 2 engines had on it before I got it from JDM land. Havent even cut the valve reliefs. 185hp & 135 tq all day long out of that setup up to 8400 rpms & Im using 290CC injectors that hit 76% @ 8400 rpms.
