K20a2 swap or K20a3 with Type S Head swap?
I've never been a fan of F/I but after seeing a few turbocharged EPs, its got me contemplating over it. Idealy, I would like to swap a k20a2 and charge it because I would start off with a better motor, but what i've heard is that its not good to charge it because it already runs at a high 11:1 compression. What I've seen a lot of people do is swap the type s head and use the k20a3 block since it runs at a lower compression. It would be cheaper for the k20a3 + type s head swap and then charging it but money really isnt an issue. Anybody with a turbocharged type s or ep or know your stuff please speak your mind =P
It seems the general consensus is if you're going turbo, either stick with the
a3, build it and boost the hell out of it or get a K24 and boost the hell out of
that (possibly with the A2 head). If you're going NA, get the K20A/A2, new cams,
new valve train, etc. and get some sick NA numbers going (plus good gas
mileage
).
That's not to say a boosted A2 isn't a very respectable engine - the RSX guys
are obviously getting a lot out of their stage 2+ turbo kits, but that involves new
pistons and other internals. Heck, the 260whp that the turbo'd A3 guys are getting
is nothing to be scoffed at. Add a limited slip, some slicks and other get-the-power-to-the-ground mods
and we're going to see some very fast Si's/base RSX's.

The Si bottom end is weak compared to the Type S or any of the K24 bottom ends. Because the ECU limits you to moderately low boost, the Type S engine works nicely.
I suggest you do the head swap and use the savings to buy the K24 bottom end.
Leave the stock tranny in but get an LSD. The 5 speed tranny is not a hinderance to perormance as much as the lack of an LSD is.
