New Oil filter size..and made by FRAM...
Any body else notice honda has changed the size of the oil filter!..
its smaller now... and its made by FRAM
If any one has seen the Type R legend Video, may remember that the Spoon guy recomends a smaller oil filter, that keeps oil pressure from changing as much.

Are you sure? I was literally about to go out and get a new Honda OEM filter. I guess I'll see if this is true or not. Smaller isn't bad, it increases oil pressure which is good so the engine don't get starved.
I bought two filters last week..
The old ones were superceded by the filters the newer engines use..

hmm, i've always used mustang 5.0 filters on my 300ZX for the additional capacity. i guess smaller does have its merits though, as long as the filtering area of the filter can keep up with the flow of your engine though. as for Fram, i dunno. kinda never liked them much
Fram = cheap. I use K&N Gold oil filters now: http://www.knfilters.com/oilfilter.htm
Features I like:
"Anti-drainback valve (where applicable) eliminates dry starts, prevents oil from draining back into crankcase during engine shutdown"
"the inner filter element traps contaminant as small as 10 to 20 microns in size. We use metal top end caps instead of paper to ensure that no unfiltered oil can get back into the system"

i think Honda engineers made the filter one size for a reason.
too much oil pressure from a smaller filter is just as bad as too little.

There is an comparison of oil filters online somewhere, i cant find it right now. They cut filters apart and then compared the inside materials. I remember the Honda filters were just paper and they said that there were better filters.
I have always bought the Honda filters because i figured they knew what their engines needed. It might be time to find a new filter supplier.

same here. even if they did use fram as a supplier, they wouldn't just pick anyone to manufacture they're filters, fram would have gotten picked for a reason...

Hond filters have always had this feature..
I am sure that Fram was forced to build the filters to HONDA specs.

How many of you guys have actually looked at the HUGE-*** filters that came with your JDM swaps? I took one in to my local AutoZone, and it was the funniest thing ever. They were scrambling through the catalogue trying to find one of comparable size and diameter... I wonder if the size of B16A gen1 oil filters has something to do with the sort of "oil cooler" fitting that comes standard? I dunno.. I was just surprised at the size difference between that massive JDM one, and my new FRAM.

I noticed that, the filter that came with my b16 was huge! I read somewhere about that oil cooling system, I forgot though. I've always used fram oil filters, I thought they were top notch filters.

a 2-3 dollar Fram filter works fine for me.

i am now using the fram PH-7317 (not positive if thats the correct # but thats what i can think of off the top of my head). Its the RSX filter and is said to give slightly more oil psi (about 5 psi). I have an external oil cooler on my motor and have noticed my oil psi drop a bit when i added it. So i figured with the addition of an external cooler, by using the RSX filter i would regain somewhat of the psi that i lost. As for the ACTUAL gain of oil psi, i never tryed the correct Fram filter for my motor to see what the psi differences are. BTW the RSX filter is tiny compared to the correct filter for my B17A1.

that's odd. two weeks ago i tried to order a rsx (smaller) oil filter for my ef, just to try it out. and the dealer to told me that the new smaller filter is discontinued and that they only make the regular one now. and thats all they had for me to buy.

im actually using an oversize filter. its made by mobil 1
i can grab the number if anyone is actually interested. its bigger diameter, same height

I just got some new ones today.

Notice how the new one doesn't have "excess" metal around the circumferece of the rubber seal? That seal is still the same size.

I dont see what the problem with fram is??
I have been using Fram for about 8 years now in all of my cars and not once ever had a problem sure there are filters that can filter out smaller microns and such but if your not running a turbo its not that big of a deal.
Fram has been around longer than probably anyone on this board has been driving so they must be doing something right!!
And also for a big car company like Honda (a company sworn on reliability) Fram must be doing something right in their eyes as well.
As for the size difference its funny with trucks and such you would want a larger oil filter so you have more capacity and on older domestic muscle cars people use to use relocation kits so they also would have more oil capacity.
To be honest the whole smaller oil filter adds more pressure seems more like wishful thinking?? I mean once the filter is full its going to push out the same pressure whether a big one or a small one think about it take 2 sinks with the same amount of pressure and water coming out of them and then put a 20 oz soda bottle under one and a 2 liter soda bottle (as long as the hole on the top is the same size) once they are both full your going to tell me that the 20 oz soda bottle is having more pressure/water coming out of it as the 2 liter soda bottle??
I think they did it to save money they probably figured out that having the bigger filter wasnt doing anything better for filtering so switched to a smaller filter so with it being smaller means less materials which in turn means less money.

I don't know about the oil pressure being higher...
But the video talk about there being less fluctuation in the oil pressure..

This is the one I got yesterday...
Looked exactly like my old one I believe. Maybe some dealers have a surplus of the old ones.
It said Filtech Inc on the side of it so I doubt its the Fram one.

i think dealers will slowly change over to the new honda oil filters. the change can't be automatic, EVERYWHERE!
and i agree with what vinceg99 said. its only and oil filter. changing your oil and filter every 3000 miles (or so) is the thing to worry about.

I work here at Honda here in Houston and the bigger filter part no. 15400-P0H-305 which supercedes to 15400-PT7-005 is now discontinued. Honda will continue to ship them out until thier stock runs out.
The smaller filter part no. 15400-PLM-A02 will take its place and is currently used on the 01 and up Civic.
The S2000 will have a new part no also, 15400-PCX-004.

when I received my d15b, ( a year and 1/2 from now) I was having a smaller filter on the engine, it was imported from japan, so I gess that filter was installed in japan, number is: co-803 (15400-pj7-005 ). I searched for that filter everywhere, I found it in a Honda ATV dealer. it's the same filter that some Honda generator use... I now run the bigger Honda filter, from the dealer... wich is exactly the same that in your pics.
As for manufacturer, Fram as to correspond to Honda specification, and Honda run some reliability test on the every part's. I gess that those filter will be at least as good as the old sized one where...
