Default Rear suspension options

can anyone shed some light on the many differant options for a rear suspension on a hotrod class drag car? as in .
....independant or solid axle?
why would you chose one over the other?
advantages and disadvantages? price?
quality?
fitment?

some company's that are making rear suspensions include MB,DTR,RLR,nuformz. and im sure that there are a bit more company's

the mb rear solid axle costs around $1300 with brakes, but doesn't include a wheel/tire combo. and is also a 4 lug setup.

the RLR rear suspension setup costs $4000 and includes strange spindle mount struts, brake assm, brake lines, and your choice of weld spindle mount wheels with goodyear tires on them.

the DTR suspension i have no idea about, but would like to know more. i know that its a solid axle with a spindle mount.

nuformz- no idea, but probably expensive.

can anyone shed any light on my questions . thanks

dave

FWIW, I run a chrome moly beam axle. The axle is 65 thou thick 1 1/2 diameter. It is suspended by a single leaf spring on each side. This spring weighs 1.2kg. This spring supports the weight of the car and locates the rear axle. It replaced about 8kg (per side) of locating rods and coil springs. It is reasonably stiff (I don't have any figures as it was custom made.

This setup seems to work really well, is cheap and VERY light.

I run the Elite motorsports custom Chromoly rear end with Circle racing wheel spindle units.
The Elite rearend saves me over 100ibs from factory, and you can supply your own wheels (like I did) or use theirs.

Their rear suspension/wheel combo retails for about $2100US.
909-460-1300..ask for Ron or Turtle, and feel free to use me as a reference.

NU FORMZ rear end on Strange shocks, MB rear end spindle mount on HAL shocks, RPM rear end, ELITE on solid axle style. I hear that a solid rear axle will not work at speeds of 150 and above. they say Viet Lam tried it and if you hit a bump on the track at high speeds, the other side is moving with it also. dangerous and loss of traction.

i dont like the setup that "ken's" makes for our cars. 4 link is for rwd drag cars. not something that is driven by the front wheels. thanks for the info, i appriciate it.

thanks to all others contributing to this thread.
would anyone happen to have a picture of the "elite" rear suspension, the suspension that Bisi speaks of???

thanks guys

The MB sold axles with STIFF springs would be a nasty suspension setup. You could shave some wait and the car will launch harder

i also had alot of doubts that the solid rear axle was "illeagal" as well. i think as long as it mounts up to factory mounting points there should be no issue's.

not that this is gonna help or anything, but a buddy of mine just orderd a solid rear axle from "speed-machine" (i guess its an mb product) and he asked them about it being legal for hotrod and they told him it was.

btw, i have heard that Sav Leone is currently running a solid rear axle ?? has he ever gotten any "****" for it???

thanks for the info guys

anyone have an adress for "AN-R" ???

thanks again.

mb(MMR) also makes a kit like the elite. It cost a little bit more but comes with shocks and springs. Check it out here

personally id stay away from the elite setup. first test pass of this (2003) season we taco'd it bigtime right at the launch.

realisticly if you have a fabricator you trust its cheapest to just build your own. spindles and brakes form strange are only like $400. then make your own axle from square tube or round tube. and make some ladder bars or whatever idea you like best to mount to the chasis.

just my .02

Dave you can run a straight axle on a hot-rod quick class car so long as the top portion where you shocks mount are factory its ok.-pdang

im in the works of putting together a spindle mount independent rear suspension, soon as i get all the correct pieces cut and finalized ill post up some pics of it... if everything goes as planned and no unnessary cost arrives i should be about to retail the complete suspension kit with wheels ands shocks for around $2700-$2990

Whatup Dave, been reading that you have been having issues with the rear suspension. Well I've dug up some pics of Mr. Kenny's scion's rear. really different,
if it works for him and is legal.....I dont see why not. You might wanna give pat a call and see what he thinks is a good route to take. Hope this helps bud...
