Hope im not screwed(hydrolock)....
So i was driving in the rain tonight being careful of puddles and such and I reach this main street on campus and the water is flowing down the street and i say to my buddy that it looks kind of deep, he says the same, but then we said it actually didnt look that bad(in the middle of the street at least) and i start to go across, about halfway through i notice its pretty damn deep and i start coasting through it(trying to keep the revs down, when i should have just turned it freaking off) and it began to studder and then dies. so im sitting there thinking, "i know what just happened" and i try to start it and it just kinda jerks and wont turn over.
We push it off the street and i pull intake off the tb and it only feels a little damp, but then i open the plate on the throttle body and water POURS out of the intake mani. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
It happened about 1.5 hrs ago now and im just wondering if im screwed. i would say i was at idle rpm and it was studdering at or below that when it died. I know the pistons are still moving pretty damn fast at idle, so should i just expect that the rods are bent? Im going to go pull the plugs and crank it to get out as much water as i can. Will a compression test be able to tell me if ones actually bent?
I do have comprehensive ins. with USAA but it is a gsr motor in a hatch, and they dont know it was a gsr motor, but i figure a sohc from honda would still be expensive. Thoughts/help/info?

pull your spark plugs and see if there is water on top of the pistions. if there is drain it. after u get the water out if there is any take and put a socket and ext on the crank pulley and see if it turns over freely. if so it might not be that bad. but if it wont u probaly bent a rod.
pull the spark plugs and check them. then unplug the distributer and fire it up. water should come spraying up through the holes. do this until it stops and let it sit for an hour or so to dry up. change the plugs and oil and see what happens. please update to let me know how it goes.. this just happened to a firend last night. dam rain in arizona! ill be operating tomorow.
pulled the plugs and starting from left side(by dist, forgot cyl. numbers) no water, no water, a little bit of water, and quite a bit. shot out of the one on the far right(1 or 4?) and hit the ceiling and still has some in there because its just kinda making a gurgling noise and spitting out a mist every time. i put in some mystery oil to keep anything from rusting until i can spray it out with my buds compressor.
should i just change the oil and start it when i get it all out? im going to do a compression check tomorrow too, but i didnt know the numbers before, so i guess if they are even am i alright, or could a rod be bent just a teeny bit(or just stressed/tweaked) where you wouldnt see it on the compression numbers but could just fail down the road. this motor was going to be boosted too, so boosting(even running it up to 7-8k) on a possible liability is a frightening thought at this point.
any other thoughts or things i should do? once again, it was at an idle speed when it took a nice drink. its not making any horrible noises as im cranking it either. just great starter noise.

You could ask for compression numbers from people with GSR motor with about the same millage as yours... Wont be accurate but it should give you an idea of what your numbers should look like.

well, being busy with school and all(seeing as its almost 4 months later with no mech. progress) ive got the claim in the works and hope to have it running early this coming semester.
one thing i was curious about was, what are the chances of the head cracking(or the valves, guides, seals) being the cause of the low compression. just curious on the likelyhood of having to deal with the head as well. im leaning towards just getting myself a new shorty and working with that because one or 2 of the oil pan nuts/bolts are stripped and my coldwelded(JB for those wondering) shut oil pressure sensor hole.

get a new SOHC from insurance (if thats all theyll give u), and build up the C1
sucks tho, I hydrolocked my LS motor but I replaced it with a B16A....another economical choice as well.

update now, should be getting my ins. check next week
. will be replacing my pistons and rods with some nice forged stuff(undecided right now on brand/compression). also, looking at the cylinders, would they need to be bored and honed or just honed with that slight coating of rust? here are some pics, pulled the shorty tonight, bought an engine stand and started tearing it down, we knew at least one rod was tweaked, and when we finally got it out it is pretty hard to miss....

nice shot of all 4

el cranko

these bad boys could use a good bore/hone

i like my garage

post working relaxation(bboy ben)

me celebrating too, btw its mango tobacco, the wacky kind gives me a headache

i was at idle or lower(slipping the clutch across the intersection). hopefully ill have it all back together very soon with some nice forged goodies. just waiting to find the right deal on those parts.

I drove mine through a hell of a puddle and locked it up tighter than **** one time. Pulled the plugs. All cylinders had water in 'em. Unhooked the coil wire and cranked it for about 30 seconds. Put the plugs back in, hooked the wires back up, after about 15 seconds of wanting to start it turned over. Sputtered like hell though. New plugs and an oil change later she ran fine. Compression numbers were pretty even across the board too. Runs just as strong as she did the day I got her off the showroom floor.
Lucky I guess. I did that at about 1200 RPM too. Was creeping through the puddle in 3rd gear.

i had already avoided lots of puddles that looked to big(cutting through parking lots) and this one wasnt a puddle, it was like a shallow(appeared that way) river. we get those here in the southwest, nice flash flooding because of the hard rain. but it gives me a reason to build it anyway, so eh.
