Default So I need a new tranny...

All this time I thougth it was a bad throwout bearing but after the mechanic put a new one in it still makes the noises, He said when the tranny was out of the car he tried to spin the CV outputs and heard a whine sound coming from with in the tranny .

So I guess I have to bring the R in for a new tranny soon - (Under warrenty)

But what bugs me is that it feels fine and I have no problems with driving, just makes a sound when ever I'm in gear that is very hard to explain.

Does anyone have any thoughts on what I should do or look for?

same syptoms here
except its for a B16 tranny

thought it was the TO bearing
changed the clutch kit and bearing

wasn't the bearing, turns out that the bearing on the clutch housing side of the main shaft had taken a **** and blew up

symptoms were, car drove fine, made a noise, went away when the clutch pedal was depressed, noise was noticeable in everygear at every rpm

I changed the bearing myself a saved a nice hunk of $$$

on the left is the new bearing, on the right is the old bearing, and on the extreme right is the rest of the old bearing...

thank god for the tranny magnet
when i took it apart it needed a really good cleaning, it had a lot of tiny metal particles everywhere and I mean A LOT

Rob get that tranny looked at before it does more damage.

another thing to look for is if the input shaft on the tranny
try spining it with your hand if it doesn't go buttery smooth, then its prob the bearing,

if it has any play its prob the bearing,

if it makes some funky noises when you spin it, its prob the bearing

I'm in the same boat Rob. My clutch makes this whooshing (sandpaper rubbing-like) noise and it's always at the same range during the clutch travel. When I depress the clutch pedal, during the first 1-1.5 inches of travel the sounds there and goes away for the rest of the travel. When I bring the pedal back up, all is fine until when the clutch starts to enage...at this point the noise comes back and goes away again only when I'm fully off the clutch. My clutch,PP,FW,and T/O bearing has been replaced twice and I'm about to bring it back to the dealership for a possible third replacement. Is my car a candidate for a lemon?

My car also feels fine also even with this noise but it's just annoying.

Good luck w/yours

Interesting. My car has developed that noise too. But it's come and go thing. It doesn't happen all the time.

I guess it's another thing to look for when the tranny gets dropped on Saturday.

I already called him.

This might be a fix for the Soups car. My car is probably the throw out bearing (per Dan).

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one who has these probelms, or should I be sad that so many people/Tegs have the same kinda problem

Dan, how long did it take you to do all the work to fix the problem?
Also how complex was it to replace that bearing?

As for messing with the 4.7, I think I'll pass- I like seeing 154 once in a blue moon

for working on our cars i'd say that on a scale from 1 to 10 , 10 being the hardest...i'd say this job is either a 9 or 10

took me one day to drop the tranny and open up the case ( dealer was closed by this time so i had to wait till the next day to order the bearing
next day i ordered the bearing
next day i picked it up, found out the bearing was defective when i got home ( of course acura is closed now)
next day i returned the bearing and ordered a new one
next day i picked up the bearing and finished the tranny and drove it the next day

so in all it took me 5 days
if i had the bearing before hand I don't see why it couldn't be done in one day..
for me, it was easily a 10 hour job

OH...

I don't have that much time to spare without the R...

I guess I'm going to have to let a shop do it in a day for me.

Could you tell me a part number please?

91004-P21-003 bearing (28x72) the one that broke on me

91216-PH8-005 oil seat, good idea to replace this, as mine was pretty beat up

991002-PS1-003 bearing (28x60) the other bearing, this one didn't get destroyed but had excessive play due to the fact that it was taking more load because the other bearing had blown up

I took my car to Acura tonight to get this noise changed. I also had this weird noise that presents itself when I turn on the AC. The AC noise goes away when I press the clutch down. The tech believes it's the bearing on the main shaft. I'm going back on Tuesday to have their transmission gurus take a closer look.

OT - Do dealerships allow owners to be in the shop while their repairs are being done? I want to make sure that they're actually replacing what they say they're replacing.

They usually won't let you in unless your buddies with an insider-

Ins rules... BS.

Just ask for the old peices that were replaced.

Bearing is the first and easiest thing to suspect but don't overlook a broken tooth on the final drive gear or the pinion gear. I had this problem, thought it was a bearing and it went kablooey! Very messy and dangerous when it decided ot lock up.

I'm not sure I can ask for the old pieces because they have to have something tangible in their records to back the claim of the warranty work.

ON Friday I stopped by the Acura Dealer and spoke with the Main man in charge.
This is what he told me, They have a few bulletins out on tranny bearings and it has been a problem for a while now.
It will take approx 3-4 days to rebuild my tranny back to new.
So All I need to do now it get the nerve to leave my R in the dealer for 4 days.
