Default Poll on Light weight FW

okay most have seen the recent threads on Light weight FW's in the past few days.
I am not trying to argue with anyone here and I certainly don't want to start a fight with anyone about this. But if you search on the Net this Topic is HOT. It always seem to stir up a big debate.
I just want to know what people prefer and why. What are your Likes and dislikes if any. Let's try not to get into theory and Physics in all there are two other threads for that. Let's keep it simple and friendly

Okay sorry for the double post but I messed up the first one.

It depends entirely on what you want to do with the car. There's no point to have a poll, and most people who give "advice" about lightweight flywheels don't have one and/or are just repeating what they heard from some guy or read in some ricer magazine. And even the people who do have one can usually only compare it to stock.

I just installed a 9.7lb (4.4kg) Kaiten Karui flywheel and I like it. It revs up nicely and the revs drop at a good speed for quick shifting (ie by the time I shift, the RPM drops to what it will be at when I put it in the next gear, so it's smooth and doesn't beat up my synchros). But like I said, I can't compare it to anything except stock, and what you do with your car is probably much different from what I do with mine, so how I feel about my flywheel may not mean much for you.

I didnt think by starting a thread concerning if i should pay 25 bucks more for a lighter flywheel would have turned into a discussion this HUGE... Are we all going to still be friends after this LoL

This Poll is Based on Personal OPINION and or Experience. It's to state What YOU as an individual like.
You are absolutely right there are too many people lacking experience trying to give advice on what someone else should or shouldn't use. This Poll I thought, would eliminate that by allowing every person to say why or why not they like a certain FW they might have had experience with.
I Chose 8-9 pounds. Closer to 9 IMO. My current 8.6 pounder is a Tad bit too light for MY LIKING.
Someone may read this and maybe they were thinking to follow the advice of another saying GET THE 6.5 lb casue it's the best... But they read my post saying that I would go back up in weight asn Say Hmmmm MAYBE there is a Chance I won't like the 6.5 lb as much as I thought.
Point being it is all about what the DRIVER can deal with and what the DRIVER is willing to give up in exchange for the better Acceleration.
So far the poll is as expected. I just wish more people would commet about their Likes/ Dislikes

What? is this an agreement? LOL

But you are missing the point of the poll. Not to prove whos right or whos wrong. All along I have been agreeing with you on the good points of the Lighter FW. It's amazes me how you missed that.
In my experience and for my application there are limits as to how light I will go and how light I feel comfortable with. If there are no NEG's then why do you think someone would not just hands down get the 6.5 fw all the time (money is not an issue) There are different weights cause there are different uses and different preferences. Yet you want to have everyone believe that it justs gets better the lighter you go. THIS is what we disagree on. NOT BETTER ALL AROUND but better Acceleration YES.
I want to change to a heavier FW not for some internet page I read or for someone tell me X Y Z but cause I liked the 12 pound FW and I like the 8.6 but I want to find something in the middle cause I want some of what i lost back. It's called Fine tuning. I love the acceleration but a 6.5 pound will not fit what I do with my car. Doesn't suit my driving style.

I didnt miss it, and quoted it numerous times. I know you agree. Where we disagree is the "disadvantages" not the advantages. And the problems of the poll have to do with exactly what Weston said...we have no idea what principles people are basing their choice on...whether it be experience or that their friend is sitting there going "dude, stock flywheels rawk."

I dont know, if I were them, and I was still NA, I would. I think people should get the lighter flywheel, and thats why I recommend it.

Another thing to consider is that the clutch bolts onto the flywheel and is rotating with it the entire time. The clutch feels approximately as heavy as the stock flywheel too. So, me going from 18lbs to 9lbs is really only around 25% lighter (instead of 50%) than before because of the clutch. And of course, there's a significant load coming from the transmission too.

But it's very responsive and acclerates pretty nicely now... Below 4k RPM is a little doggy like usual, but once I hit 4k, it flies to 7. This is a LS with I/H/E, which seems much faster now (although it's hard to judge because I hadn't driven it in a month and a half).

Light weight is good stuff for rev matching, but it doesn't help with much else.

Reason why someone would go for a slightly heavier FW over the lighter one is because they prefer to regain some of what was lost. Finding a Balance between great Acceleration and drivieability.

If you purchase a FW and the weiht is taken off from the edges and compare that to the same weigh fw where th weight was removed uniformly over the whole FW the first one would appear to be lighter as far as the engine is concerned.

What I don't like about the Aluminum FW: Mainly is the Multiple Piece construction. Maybe it's just me but I prefer to have ONE PIECE Cromoly

Reguardless of WHY people want or don't want a Lighter FW there are Different preferences. Poll is to look at the Different preferences. I wish more would state why or why not, but the numbers are interesting to say the least.

I agree with some of what is said about the disadvantages, but over all I think lots of people want lighter to go faster and they don't care about the downside as long as they are going faster.
I voted for 8-9 cause I think it is atleast 1/2 the weight as the stock and as a rule I wouldn't go lower than 1/2 the weight although I have a 12 pound flywheel on my car now I am saving up for a lighter one. Maybe SpoonTEG wanna trade. Just kidding

LW flywheel is for road racing. I have no complaints with them. I use CM's 9lb aluminum FW.

I have a 9lb AASCO flywheel in my car, and everyday i drive i regret not going lighter. I also have a full faced clutch though, so I regret not getting an ultra light flywheel instead of the 9lb unit. My opinion the lighter the better, thats for clutch and flywheel.

Here is a Statement from a webpage sited in one of the other threads:

The trade-offs are as follows: the heavier the flywheel, the smoother the idle, the easier the starting is from a stop, and the smoother the cruising/slight throttle changes are. BUT - the slower the acceleration is. The lighter the flywheel is, the harder it is to get the car moving from a stop (just requires a somewhat higher RPM before the clutch is let out - which wears the clutch faster), depending on porting, intake, and exhaust, the idle will be somewhat rougher, and some "jerkiness" may be noticed while cruising. BUT - you will be able to accelerate faster.

The above reasons are why there are basically three types of flywheels offered. The stock units are fine for most "normal" driving, as done by the vast majority of drivers. The light steel ones are great for "spirited" street driving, middle range autocross classes, some drag racing (heavier is sometimes better), and just general high-performance applications that will still be driven on the street sometimes. The lighter aluminum flywheels we continue to not recommend for street driving, but there are MANY of our customers doing it. We just do not want complaints, or returns, from anyone who purchased an aluminum flywheel, and then didn't like the way it felt when driven on the street.

I have a CM9lb aluminum flywheel for 2 years now and have beat it to hell and back almost everyday. I can honestly say that all your "trade-offs" are a pile of ****. I know my car and how it acts and its nothing like what you've mentioned. I am stating my 2yrs of experience here. Take it for what its worth. It feels good too.

Perhaps your car is just dfferent. have gone from a Stock to 12 and now to 8.6 pounds
and the trade offs are there they increase with the degree of lightening. For you to say that they are a "Pile of ..." what does that mean? If you say that there is no change in driveability of the car I will call BS on that. Having Owned three different FW actually 4 if you include the original one on my Civic's C1 engine. Having used Light weight FW for a number of years I think it is BS to tell others that there is no change. And if that is not what you are saying then isn't it possible that the CHANGE can be seen as a "Trade off in Drivability"? I have an 8.6 lb FW and I say that there are Tradeoffs as listed above.
Purpose of this poll is not to bash others opinions which THEY ALL ARE. OPINIONS!!!!
At a food tasting Contest you says it is good and I say it is disgusting. How can you say that that is BS? It is my take on how the food tastes? Look at the poll there are Differeing opinions about what FW is best for that person. I like a 8-9 pound FW (actually puts us in the same Category) But Just cause I like I will not assume that everyone else should. Going from 12 pounds to 8.6 I noticed a BIG difference. I adjusted to it althouh I think a 9 pounder is more for my style. I enjoy the 8.6 and I drive it daily, BUT i can't deny I had to make adjustments to my style of driving and I have to admit there are times when I don't like the 8.6 (Stop and go Traffic during rush hour or driving through the city) Well I live in the suburbs so I can avoid that most of the time so I deal with it. For the most part I like it now that I am used to driving.
Think of it like this: There are some who like to drive Manual tranny over Auto. I totally swear by a manual tranny. I think it makes the car more fun to drive. But there is a BIG driving style change over driving an auto matic. I can't honeslty say MANUAL TRANNY is totally Drivable for everyone. Someone asks me my opinion i give them the pros and cons. I like it but... But then you get used to it... In my opinion it is better than Auto, but there are times when auto trannies are better even in a RACE setting.

So far about 40% of the people who votes think that 9 pounds and up is their place.

I am dissappointed not to see more people giving thier reviews on the FW. Contrary to popular beliefs. This was not a RIGGED POLL to show that Everyone agrees with me. There are some Strong Opinions for every weight.
Purpose of this poll was to get a feel for What you like and dislike about ... Every situation has pros and Cons. Lightweight FW are no different.
The Poll has proven what I already Knew, but just wanted to illustrate. And that is that Lighter is not always better for everyone, but this certainly wasn't the "Purpose of this Poll." This isn't a "I'm right and you're wrong." situation when the two "so called" opposing parties seem to agree that 8-9 pound FW is good for them. I really think it funny too. LOL

I like a Lighter FW, but I can't say that it is for everyone. I can't buy into the "Lighter is Better" Mind set. 8-9 Pounds is better for me and those like me that find it as their Limit. But ther are plenty of people that Like Heavier than 9 pounds 40% which is the majority right now. And there are some who like Lighter than 8 pounds. That is why manufacturers make them in DIFFERENT weights. It's all about a BALANCE for you and your car. That's why it is called TUNING

PEACE people don't get all worked up it is just an OPINION POLL. There is NO RIGHT or WRONG here it is all baout what you want for your Car.
