Default Which Header, Toda or Spoon

I'm looking into getting a header and was curious to know what other people suggest based on experience and knowledge. I think I have narrowed it down to these 2 based on performance, quality, and fitment. My car is used for everyday driving with alot of spirited driving and the occasional track day. I want to stick to basic bolt ons except possibly cams. I would like to get in the high 190 - 210 whp range. What Header and even Cam for that matter do you guys suggest. I have checked out the Great Header Test and thats one of my resources for narrowing my choice to these two. I'm kinda leaning towards the Spoon because of the higher torque numbers but the Toda definetly has more peak Hp so I'm still in a stick situation. As you can see I am very picky and tend to dwell on very trivial things. I must have a psychological disorder or something. Well thanks in advance

Ryan

I would go with Toda just because it has much better ground clearance.

Well I can tell you that the SPOON 4-2-1 Header is a great choice for GOOD Mid Range to High.... the 45mm diameter Primaries go into a 48.6mm and then into a 60.5mm collector.

It was designed for a good balance between peak power and torque, and this is precisely where I'd say that the Spoon Header is good

Thanks I appreciate the advice. I have heard from a reliable resource that the spoon header has a ground clearance problem. I wouldn't normally care but the roads I drive on on my way to work would put a dent in my decision....errr header.

I can check into that as I am curious of this myself.

From what I can Eyeball the 4-2-1 has the same Staggered design as the Stock 4-1 98 spec header. But perhaps something else is different.

SGT has an ITR in his shop right now with a Spoon header. The other day I took a couple pictures of it just to document the ground clearance. The car is jacked up in these pictures.

The clearance on the Spoon header is not the greatest. In the two years I have had a Spoon header, I have collected a few dents. Other then the clearance issue, its a great header.

I have had the Spoon header for coming up on almost a year now and have had no problems with clearance. You just have to be aware of it and be careful in certain situations.

It is a great header...

I had the Spoon on a lowered ITR and I never had a problem w/ the clearance...

Either header is a great improvement...

I'll chime in on the "clearance" issue for the Spoon...

I have the Spoon header, lowered with H&R Sports (which are pretty low) and I live in Phoenix, where speedbumps are everywhere and dips in the raod are quite common. I have never scraped at all. - knock on wood.

Now, my best buddy has the Toda on his car. To be honest, he 'usually' is running faster 1/4 times than me. Maybe he is a better driver, better overall setup... whatever.

Spoon clearance isn't all too bad on a B18 block. Its sucks nuts on a B16 though....

Toda makes more power and had better clearance plus nicer welds.

I say either Toda or SMS

Awsome power, too.
Best et with stock exhaust- 14.9
Best et with TODA and Tanabe- 14.4 no ****. 1/2 sec improvement

Track conditions and driving skill played a much bigger difference i'm sure. I myself would go with SMS or Hytech for the money. Your mainly paying for the name with the Toda or Spoon. If you must get 1 of those 2 get the Toda.

whatever, dude-

Sure, SMS and Hytech are great headers but unless you're building a high comp, big cam race engine, as I'm sure you have and need, the TODA or Spoon will give the average person with basic bolt ons all the power they will ever be able to realize.

Ok your right, track conditions play no part in your quarter mile time
And after going to the track the next time you didn't get better at driving the second time around

Just saying as all 4 headers are around the same price, might as well get the most potential bang for your buck. Sorry if my post made it seem like I was dissing your header (which i wasn't), if theres a better product on the market thats what I'd buy, but hey thats just me. Toda makes good headers and products, I personally don't care for any Spoon products and think they are just marginally better than OEM performance wise. Since everyone is free to spend their money as they see fit, its really up to them.

I don't think you'd have any trouble achieving those numbers w/ a JDM DC 4-1. Look at it this way, your buying an exhaust right? You could buy the DC header and your new exhaust for just a bit more than the cost of the Spoon or Toda header alone. In my opinion for $500 less and putting out comparable numbers the DC is the way to go!

Ask Grandpa about that. 190+ with stock compression and cams is nice. At least I think GK is still on stock compression...

But for the money, consider SMS.

That is taking it a bit far in my opinion. The Spoon header has proven to be one of the top performers...

I run the SPOON header, with my only modification to the car. I run stock ride height as well. HPDE tracking and some daily driving with no complaints. No issues of groung clearance with this stock setup. If you want something that will just "bolt in", any of these headers will give you a noticable increase. (SPOON, TODA, OE JDM, DC 4-1) Remember though, quality is on the SPOON and TODA though.

Thanks,
Victor
