Hey everyone, my name is Nathan, and i'm from Bangkok Thailand.. stumbled across this place from somewhere on the net.. looked great so I thought i'd register.. here's pics and specs of my not-so-normal 1998 EK Civic sedan..
(front view)
(rear view)
(side view)
(engine)
(additional fuel injectors in intake manifold ports)
(boosting with Toyota 1G-GTE pistons at 2 bar (24 psi)
(normal meters & electronics)
(ECU's meters)
(My red Recaro SR-Millenniums with Trust 4-point safety harness)
(TurboLink piggyback ECU)
What i've done to the car so far:
D16Y8 engine (1.6l SOHC VTEC)
Toyota 1G-GTE (1st gen. Supra) pistons (75mm.. same size as the D16Y8's, believe it or not!)
JDM B16A connecting rods (modified to fit)
Ported exhaust and intake ports
Ported valves
Ported intake manifold
Ported turbo air inlet
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 3 TD-05H turbo
2.5mm custom-made head gasket
8.2:1 compression ratio
GReddy Type-S blow-off valve
HKS type S external wastegate
HKS Hiper exhaust with 2.5" straight pipe (no catalytic converter)
FiRST 1-piece aluminium blockguard (9mm)
FiRST turbo manifold
OS Giken TwinPlate clutch (from an RX7, modified to fit)
2 x Bosch fuel pumps
JDM Mitsubishi Galant VR4 intercooler
Toyota Supra radiator core
4 x JDM B18C fuel injectors
Stock main fuel injectors
MSD 6A Ignition
MSD Blaster SS coil
MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor wires
HKS Super Fire Racing Iridium Sparkplugs (No.9 - S45)
K&N Filtercharger
Z.Speed strut bar
GReddy turbo timer
TRUST pillar
TRUST 4-point safety harness
SARD Racing Exhaust Temp meter
SARD Racing Oil Press meter
SARD Racing Boost meter
LambdaLink Air/Fuel ratio meter
KnockLink knock meter
Autometer Pro Shift-Lite
Recaro SR-Millennium seats
Momo leather shift ****
Link Engine Management programmable piggyback ECU
Enkei Racing RP01 16" rims painted flat black
Bridgestone Potenza RE711 tires (205/45/R16)
Neuspeed racing springs
Tanabe Sustec dampers
Bendix Metal King Gold brake pads
It currently runs mid 13's on the quartermile now at 1.2 bar (18 psi) of boost with street tires. not bad considering the weather here (humid and hot, 36 degrees celcius almost DAILY)
Please give feedback if you want to
suggestions appreciated, I'm seriously thinking of changing the turbo.. though still not sure what to go for.. maybe some of you can suggest

The Toyota pistons are cheap, and can handle boost at up to 1.4 bar. Beats buying a set of forged pistons, and my car is a daily driver, so I don't think i'll be pushing anything higher than 1.2 bar anyway..
The hood is lifted up at the rear to help with air circulation in the engine.. weather here is hot and humid everyday.. so I have to do as much as possible to help with the air circulation inside the engine bay

Interesting set-up you have, I have never read of someone doing what you have done-very original..
I was also curious about that Mitsubishi Lancer turbo set-up you have on there. I'm sure it would be pretty difficult to find somebody to put that on here in the states. Anyway, what kind of gains did you receive from that type of turbo?(hp, boost,etc..)

maxim_force, I haven't been on the dyno yet, but it will be going on soon (its not cheap to get your car on the dyno here). Boost wise, the turbine is already spinning at 2500rpm, and I have full boost (1.2 bar/18psi) at about 3500rpm.. my turbo has been modified a little to give quicker boost response.. but I want it to pull harder than it is now.. and I want to do that without adding more boost.. so I think i'll be going for a more larger turbo sometime soon
wow! quite a set-up you have there, how strict are the laws there concerning modifications? i've heard some countrys are very strict. whats the scene there like?
i never knew toyota pistons could fit, very intersting. very nice work and welcome to honda-tech

The clutch is carbon/carbon.. real OS Giken for an RX7. The flywheel from an RX7 is almost the same as the flywheel on the D16Y8.. one guy here who has been doing racing clutches for 20 years or so has apparently done this conversion a few times.. but I tell ya, it really works.. so well infact that I literally snapped my driveshaft at autocross last sunday!! still I had a spare so the car was drivable again the next evening
here's some pics of the clutch (with other bits and pieces that were enlargened at the machine shop) along with the modified RX7 flywheel installed onto my engine..

lucas569, put it this way.. there are imprezas and evolutions roaming the streets of bangkok with straight pipes as exhausts.. there aren't any laws here.. loudness, pollution.. the cops have better things to do than scream at racers. And if you do happen to get into trouble, you can give then some dinner money and they'll let you go
DLB1994, the Link piggyback ECU controls the additional injectors, as well as controlling the boost, retarding ignition, and controlling the VTEC and rev limiter

I saw your car on http://www.onlineshowoff.com Looks good man! I voted a 10 on it. Anyway, just a warning about that site. It is dominated by VW owners. They have 21 cars on there. All are in the top 25. I have more mods in my brakes and suspension than they have in their whole car and they tell me mine is ****. You will get very unfavorable remarks from those idiots. They hate everything Honda. They also rig the voting to make sure that the VW's stay at the top.
OH Sweet!!
Most of my friends are Thai and your car is just like they tell me. Crazy engine mods and crazy engine swaps, no laws and all that! Your set up is tight!! I need to go...

How do you like the Turbo Link in your setup?
How much of a difference is there between the Turbo Link
and the Integra Link?
Thanks
Oh yeah, I love your sleeper 4 door!! It's is clean and yet doesn't look
to menacing! hehehe

BigJames, yeah i've noticed how a lot of the **** on that site is euro.. nevermind, we'll be spanking them on the roads with our boosted powerplants..
and all their girlfriends will be sitting there wishing that they had a boyfriend with a fast car
AzianAvenger, the TurboLink must be used in conjunction with the engine's factory ECU. As I said above, its a "piggyback" ECU, not a replacement ECU. The IntegraLink is a full replacement ECU which replaces the stock ECU. I would have gotten a full ECU, but unfortunately they don't have any models that suit the SOHC VTEC engines..
thanks to everyone for the comments on my ride

The hood is an old hot rod trick it removes the normall low pressure area in the engine bay. Looks weird to ricers but intriquing to hot rodders or people who know what its for!
The car looks great and those guages look pretty phat too!! Also props on the aluminum exhaust shield and custom injector boss

Do you find the Piggy-back ECU and two Fuel pumps to be more adjustable than a Fuel Pressure Regulator?
You demonstrate a high degree of workmanship and understanding of all the systems involved. Am I correct in assuming that all of the work was done yourself, or with the aide of some friends?
Respectfully,
Karl

Absolutely.. as a matter of fact, I don't need to adjust the fuel pressure, because I have the two Bosch fuel pumps.. one is enough actually, but I have a small fuel reservoir container in the trunk to keep a constant equal flow of fuel to the engine. The Link ECU controls the additional injectors and help the stock injectors with fuel delivery ONLY when boost arrives. If there is no boost, they wont be activated (and the Link ECU will not be active either), hence normal driving (driving without boost) equals normal fuel consumption from a Normally Aspirated stock engine
The entire engine work was done by a garage which I know.. the piston trick has been done on many turbocharged Civics over here.. Toyota pistons are real cheap.. I can buy then for about US$20 each
So when I blow a piston (which has only happened once because of a boost spike from a broken spring in my wastegate) I don't need to cry.. I just go and buy another $20 piston and pop it in.. hehe
