The Ubermotor - how will it do on the dyno?
So JE Import Performance is going to have their dyno at VIR this weekend, and at RacerBowie's request, I'm going to have it dyno'd. This is the "Ubermotor" - an engine that keeps going and going despite something absurd like 48 weekends on it.
Some folks, though, think she might be more tired than I think. Any guesses where she'll dyno? It's internally stock, has a 2.5" open exhaust, an old DC 4-2-1 header, an AEM, and a Mocal 19 row oil cooler.
Any bets on how much power this poor old thing is making?

i think 160 or so at the wheel....
i hope its not over 170; mine only made 172 earlier this year before it got "hurt"!
probably down a little since that episode....

Don't dyno it man, you will kill its mojo or something. Don't tempt fate.

So, never having dyno'd anything at all ever, can you guys use the lower number from a dynapack and translate that to "It's busted" versus "It's making good power?" I have no idea.
That guy is raw! bandana to hold up the fro, old white T, cigs in pocket, 1987 jeans and tennis shoes. He looks like he has a "back off, i'm security" stance going on there

I voted 150hp btw, heh

I think "Will blow up on dyno" should be changed to "will blow up dyno."

Lyonel Kent's Civic dyno'd at 95hp at the wheels, after JE tuned it up from 87hp......I know its not a GSR but I wouldn't expect too much more.....

While on the dyno, the motor blows up. In a mysterious chain of events the DynoJet's 48" roller drum breaks free from its mounts and flys out of the trailer, rolls through the paddock and destroys 3 cars on its way down the hill, over the pit wall, cutting off the legs of the starter tower and into the middle of a school group where 4 more cars are destroyed before it comes to rest in the trees after crushing the T1 flag stand and flaggers.
Meanwhile, Shultz's car is catapulted off the dyno and careens into the bathrooms causing an odd surge of backpressure which causes Old Faithful-like geysers to spout out of every plumbing fixture in the facility.
The "Aura Of Shultz" then escapes out of the now gaping hole in his block and makes its way into the atmosphere where it causes 2 DirectTV, 3 weather and 2 spy sattelites in geosynchronous orbit over Danville to fall out of the sky. One lands on the Innkeeper, crushes through the cieling and lands right in Shultz's bed.

Either Phil is being phunny or that dyno reads wayyyy low. I'd bet Floyd's left ******** that Lyonel's car is turning AT LEAST 115 at the ground.
Hell, it should turn 100 bone *** stock.
Scott, who's 170 whp (dynojet) GSR could barely pull Lyonel's car down the front straight at CMP last year.

And whose 170whp GSR couldn't catch me (but I didn't walk away) on the straight at VIR either. This is when we officially crowned it the "Ubermotor."
That was, for my car, only something like 7 track weekends ago...could the tide have turned in such a short time? Inquiring minds will find out this weekend. If I can get the driveaxles installed in time (sigh...)

Well I guess it's time to clear up the mystery about different dyno's reading different #'s for those who don't allready know. Every dyno has a different correction factor. The correction factor is what the computer uses along with the data that is receives from the roller, hub, temp. sensor...ect..to convert those #'s into a horsepower reading. Dyno Jet happens to have one of the highest correction factors to make up for the many inaccurate readings and the large amount of variables that change. This is why they are known for padding the #'s a little more and therefore reads a good amount higher than actual horsepower. The whole thing about dyno's is that they are meant for tuning. You want to see if that $3000 header really helps, do a baseline run then put the header on and go again.....this is where you really benefit from a dyno. What separates a good dyno from a bad dyno is one that is repeatable, and can measure microscopic changes such as spark plug gap. If you think about it....if your car is spinning a 1000 lb drum(dynojet)....or a 100 lb hub(dynapack)...which do you think would be more likely to accurately measure that fine gain in HP. When I say repeatable I Mean you do a couple runs, then run the same car again two months later and it reads identical... unless something was changed, this is what separates the Dynapack from the rest of the crowd. It is so repeatable that sometimes 6 pulls look like one rainbow colored line. The less variables that can change from run to run the better. For instance, when you strap your car down to a roller style dyno if you are one click different on the ratchet strap then the last time, there can be a substantial difference in readings. Tire pressures greatly effect HP #'s on those style dyno's as well. So when it all boils down....a dyno is a dyno, but the one you want to use is the most repeatable......Don't take these statements to be bashing dynojet...I just used that name because everyone know's it, and it is the traditional roller style dyno. Once again a dyno is a dyno. Hope this doesn't confuse everyone more.
I thank you for explanation. I learned something new..........its all relative if you think about it, well at least this weekend it will be, when everyone is on your Dynapack....
