i keep hearing mixed information on whether or not its necessary to upgrade the rod bolts on the Eagle rods...

my thoughts initially were that being that the bolts are ARP bolts, they are a world stronger than the factory bolts...but now i'm hearing horror stories that these bolts are the econo ARP bolts and that they should be upgraded at all costs...

if i'm gonna be running anywhere between 250-350WHP on my setup (B16 head, GSR bottom end, built) and running the stock redline, should there be any need to upgrade? your thoughts please..

 

I want to know this too. What kinda power are the eagles with upgraded bolts good to? Don't say 700+ like eagle says...I wanna know what the experience tuners have to say.

 

in order to run the Eagle upgraded bolts, you need to have the eagle rods resize, since the new bolts takes 45 ft/lb of torque versus 28 ft/lb on the shelf bolts.

I believe the cost to have it resize is about 40-50 bucks. I bought a set of the upgraded bolts ( Custom Age 625) brand new and I am selling it since I now have crower rods. I called a check on a few machine shops and that's how much they quoted me to resize the rods.

Unless things have changed, Eagle uses a 5/16" rod bolt. By upgrading, I think we are talking about going to a 3/8" rod bolt (the size used on Crowers, etc.). When doing this, two things happen to the rod. The rod itself gets weaker because of the larger bolt hole necessary. Second, as Stan says, the big end of the rod must be resized because of the changes and higher torque specs on the 3/8" bolt.

Earl, the bolt is still the same 5/16", they didn't go to a larger 3/8" like crower does, it's just machining is required becasue of the higher torque rating.

I thought the upgraded bolt was a 7\16th ARP 2000...I would just leave well enough alone or buy Crowers...

the 2000 is what comes in shelf rods. The upgraded one is CustomAge 625

The standard ARP 2000 and Custom Age 625 are both a 5/16" bolt with a 3/8" bolt head. According to my Eagle sheet the ARP 2000 torques to 28 ft lbs with a .0048"-.0052" stretch and the Custom Age 625 torques to 32 ft lbs with a .0062"-.0066" stretch.

 

Might be a worthy modification...but stock Eagles are fine, everyone has been trippin lately and jumpin on the dog on eagle bandwagon...last year, eagle wer the best thing since sliced bread. Now I know a few people (Stan) have had problems, but the rest of you suckas need to stop blowin' **** outta proportion

I never have liked Eagles and I never will
but I'm sure many have had great experiences with them. They are better than stock rods, however

 

i dont know why but i just order a set with the custom age 625.
Im going to see how long they last on *** my candy a$$.

My view on this subject is as follows. I have a set of Eagle rods in my motor. I rebuilt my engine just before the winter and freshened everything up for the summer. My engine builder pointed out to me that my rod bolts were starting to stretch. I have never seen this before. It looked like my rod bolt was made out of playdo. If I had driven this motor any further I would have posted my horror story about my rod taking a **** on me and destorying everything around it. My setup was making 300+whp. Now each case is different. Some guys have made 647(Rocket is the members name on this site I believe). So it basically boils down to a personal perference. What makes you comfortable. For a majority of us on this site that daily drive our cars and don't crank up the boost until specail occasions it should be fine. But for the track demons that race all the time, I would do it.

 

Liam and I went though the same discussions about his motor. What we came down to, was was it really worth saving $300 on your $2500 built motor? If it was to break for any reason, you have alot of money down the tube.
We ended up with Crower for his motor and Pauter for mine. Very nice rods, heres a pic.
