Default 99 Honda Accord Hesitation Problems

Hello all,

I am having some hesitation problems with my Accord. I took it to Honda and the computer did not find any problems. When I accelerate, it will pause for a second before it begins to accelerate. The car runs great other than this. Any ideas?

Thanks

It's a VTEC 4 Cylinder. How much does it normally cost to get timing checked and fixed? Honda says the timing wouldn't be the issue. However..the car has 47,000 miles on it and I have never had the valves adjusted.

Listen to SOHCkordVTEC and make sure that pedal aint sticking making you think thats theres a hesitation.. a once common problem..
My guess would be a carbon build-up clogging up your egr ports..
I doubt it would be a valve issue because they would be quite noisy..
but if you haven't adjusted the valves yet, then please do so... your overdue..

Are you noticing hesitation problems when accelerating from a standstill or from a cruising speed?

I notice it more when I do a "California Rolling Stop"...I'll cruise almost to a stop, then begin to accelerate. It will then sometimes hesitate. I did check my distributor rotor and it is a little worn....looks a little darkened and frayed a bit. The car runs great, I only notice a little slower idle than it used to idle..like when it was new. Also, there is a little slack in the cable when I press the peddle. About 1/4 of an inch before it begins to pull the throttle. I normally don't get hesitation when cruising. Just starting out normally. By the way..how much does it cost to get the valves adjusted and is it best to go to Honda for it. They said a tune up at Honda is about $300 dollars. I really appreciate all of your help. If it is the cable, how would I go about adjusting it to see if it is sticking? Thanks again....

Maybe your Accord needs a tune-up depending on how many miles you put on, but it sounds like your car is performing like all other Accords. Automatic Accords are known for their slow-shifting, specifically slow downshifting. It has trouble deciding when to switch gears during certain engine RPM. If you're trying to accelerate from a slow speed, the current gear you're in probably is not transmitting enough torque and the transmission has to downshift to correct this. I hate to say it, but I have the same slight hesitation when accelerating from lower engine speeds, but not from a standstill. You're cruising almost to a stop and then accelerating probably from second gear when the transmission wasn't able to switch to first gear yet. The only way you'll know if your hesitation is based on your throttle cable or the slow-a$$ transmission is by accelerating from a complete stop. The transmission will switch to first gear. Try to accelerate hard, and your Accord should pull the instant you floor it.

dang... tell me about it, i gots the same car u have, i guess thats 1 of the flaws from an automatic, slow accleration at the start. i doubt u can fix it unless u change it 2 a manual tranny, otherwise turbo-charge it ...hahaha

Honda autos have always been that way, nothing wrong just a fact of life. As far as the Valve adjustment my dealer does it for 88 bucks. My Accord is starting to sound like a sewing machine! It's in the shop right now.
