Default WARNING SOHC y8 intake manifold swap info you need to know

Ok heres the news

a 96-98 y8 manifold is different than a 99-2000, even though it man not look very different it is..

heres the breakdown, honda decided late year 98 that they would incorporate an air injection system right at the injectors in the new model....im not sure what its supposed to accomplish, but thats not the point, its there..

as you look at the manifold there is a vacuum nipple right near the flange that mates to the head, Hmm clue number one "what does that do?"

if you look at the ports you will notice right above the fuel injector there is a small hole, Clue number 2.

Now the main problem, if the ports above the fuel injectors on the flange side are not plugged, and plugged good, you will have a nice vacuum leak.

so heres the fix

this may seem ghetto to some, but the idea works(i just did it)

find a rivet, one that isnt long more like a 1/4 inch deep, one that fits the hole pretty snug, but not too tight....

get some honda-bond, i swear by this stuff, its great, its only $20 from honda, so go get some...

put honda-bond on the rivet and insert into the hole right above the fuel injector, use the rivet gun of course and expand that sucker in the hole, thus sealing the hole very well.

the rivets will not come in contact with the head anywhere because the intake manifold flange is taller than a 96-98 and the holes above the fuel injectors that you are pluggin are above the regular gasket area, soo no problems there.

and USE a 2000 y8 intake manifold gasket

now it may be redundant to do this but i did, the nipple that we talked about first, cap that off with a plug also....making sure if the rivet didnt go deep enough that you wont have any random air getting in there.

there you go hope this helps someone plan the swap alittle better

The people who have done the y8 IM swap stick to the 96-98 IMs because of what you found. Good info though for someone who wants to swap a 99-00 y8 IM.

just took some thinking to figure out(like most things we do on our cars anyways)

I have mentioned that same thing to people doing the Y8 manifold swap before. The Edelbrock manifold is about ready to be released, and it will work on both 96-98 and the 99-00 with air-injection. Plugs are given to block off the air-injection on 96-98 models.

Some pics would be real sweet...Maybe if I had a manifold in my hands I could figure it out.

be warned as the later style does not fit on the z6/b7 style 88-95 non vtec heads, due to this extra flange material. perhaps if i am not lazy i can get some pics.

Here are a couple pics of my '00 Y8 manifold. I sold it and plugged the little holes above the intake ports for the guy who bought it. The gasket, along with the plugs should seal everything, but you can put a vacuum cap over the center hose nipple just to keep stuff out of it.

does this apply to ONLY putting a 99-00 y8 intake manifold on a 96-98 y7? I have a 99 y7 motor, and i have a 99-00 y8 intake manifold...would i still need to plug up those holes? please let me know, becuase i will be performing this swap sometime soon, and i would like to know, thanks.

So I guess I will have to plug these holes on my 99 Y8 manifold when I put it on my Z6 longblock huh?
I am sure glad I found this info.
Where does that nipple go from the factory? What does the hose hook up to?

great info. i did that manifold swap on my 91 si head and boy was it a bitch. i had the grind down the extra flang so it would fit onto my head. i also cut off that nipple thing and plugged all the holes. sad to say, all it gave me was better throttle response. i say only do this if you have a lot of mods.

My swap was performed on a 98 DX, so yes.....basically everyone that has a 96-98 gen d series motor has to read and do this trick in some way shape or form.

a 99 and up d series non vtec is a different story....im not quite sure i havent seen that gen head or manifold so i cant say without a doubt that you will be ok...

heres a main question....DO you have an Air injection system on your engine? if yes, then you might be ok as long as there is a flat part on the head that the ENTIRE manifold will mate too.

if you DONT then you have to do this trick

the guys with the earlier gen d series have to make room on the manifold so it fits...

and im glad people are reading this post, so they can get there swaps done the right way the first time..

i know when i saw the holes and how it was designed it got kind of discouraged....but it all works out in the end, as does all things

What exactly do mean? make room?

I am putting a Z6 in my car. I blew up my 99 D16Y8 and am going to use the IM off the Y8...As far as the nipple I think I had just a hose ran over to the side with a bolt in it.

What does the air injection do?

I was thinking about it...Couldnt you just block off the hole on top of the intake...Or I mean where the runners meet the head?

I thought that only automatic intake manifolds were this way? Good info.

The air-injection on a 99-00 Civic EX is a hose that runs from the stock air intake to a thermal switch in the thermostat housing. From there the air is routed to the intake flange. The thermal switch only allows air to pass when the engine is cold, and the air is circulated through the tip of the fuel injector. My guess is this is a cold-start feature, probably developed for emissions reasons. It is only on the EX, so all 96-00 D16Y7 engine wanting to swap a Y8 manifold will need to block it off if you buy a 99-00 Y8 manifold.

NO, you can't simply just block off the top vacuum port. Since only the Y8 head has the proper gasket seal on the head, if you only plug the top vacuum port, you will have a vacuum leak from all of the injectors into the manifold by the way of the fuel injectors. You must block the four holes to the fuel injectors. Then, blocking the main vacuum port on the top of the flange is only optional, only if you feel like covering that one, but I reccommend doing it.
