Default B18b vs. B16a?

Im planning on doing a engine swap for my civic. Which engine would be better for the price. Im leaning towards the B18b, becuase I've seen them cheap. Do any of you guys know where to find new or used engines?

i would go with the B16 becuase it will be faster and beacuse of the head. u can always get a different bottom end for more power and stick with the B16 head...

IMO, it really depends on your plans when it comes to those two engines.

B18 has decent low end torque.. b16 is an absolute weiner down low (IMO). That's obvious.

So.. I think you need to make up your own mind.

There are billions of places to buy engines on the internet. You can find one right here on honda-tech if you look. Not to mention a bazillion topics on places you can purchase an engine from..

a b18b with a b16 transmission is faster in the 1/4 mile.

not by much. but by a little.

only at about 100 does the b16 start to be faster than the ls.

torque owns.

I would get the b18b because it has more torque and will rival a b16a as long as it has a b16 tranny. you will out launch the b16. then when you hit top end then the b16 starts to pull. so in 1/4 mi you will lose probably by no more than 1 car lengths if you lose at all. then it comes down to driver as well. though it may be a little slower it cost much less. P.S think wisely before you choose. it all depends what you want to do with the car.

i say go wit the b16..cuz the replacement for displacement is V-TEC and also later down the road u can get a b18 block...blocks r always easier to find then heads..and cheaper

I don't think there is a big difference between having some displacement vs. a little more than some displacement.

It's a freaking 4 banger not a V8.

it depends on what your going to do to the motor, if you plan on just dropping it in and keepin it NA id go with a b16, but if you plan on turboing down the road, then go with ls

go ls. i have one in my hatch and it pulls good. whoop on eg hatches with b16's all day..thats me and my stock ls motor against people with their stock b16 motor.

with the ls u leave the b16 off the line and with the top end of the ls...get 4-1 header...that little b16 aint going to catch you...vtec or no vtec

btw...i'm selling my ls swap too if your interested...98 b18b1 with 36k :D

I'm running a b16 with an ls tranny, kinda backwards from some of what these guys are saying to do. My yardstick is my g/f's car. She's got a '97 GSR and I take her cleanly every time.

actually... i have a friend with a b18b with an itr tranny in a 94 cx hatch and he still gets beat by b16as. b18 non-vtecs are as fast as everyone thinks.

i say b16. youll love walking away from those b18bs

i say go with the b16 beacuse u can always build ur 1.8 or 2.0 block on the side..this will allow u to have less down time compared to going lsvtec with the b18b in the car already..

their both good motors, one with high end, and the other with low end. They are very similiar in times in the quarter mile, so if i were you, I would choose the one that is the most cost effective. (cheap)

(side note: I drove a b16 hatch, and an ls hatch, and daily driving was much more fun with the ls....however, when they were both quartered miled, third gear vtec owned the ls motor, with a 14.9 (b16) and a 15.0 (LS)..)

The B16 is the better motor. No question about it.

And to the people who say "oh well I've never lost to a B16"...I've never lost to a B18B. So personal experiences should not matter in this thread

With just the straight up swap you will be faster with the b16a. From just my personal experinces at teh track ive never lost to a b18b civic (or any b18c1's )
