OT: Hybrid owners with stolen motors get owned at HIN Houston
I wish they would check VIN's at various spots here in South Florida. I can name about 5. I can guarantee half of the hatchbacks out here have stolen motors. One of them are mine... I'd pay to see something like this go down. Second to none entertainment compliments of the theives.

Im going to put a copy of my "papers" in my hatchcrap now.
I never wanted to carry them with me, because it has a lot of the sellers personal information in there.

There`s a flipside to this story though: I`ve had a few friends get towed from shows and they are totally legit, just didn`t have their receipts handy. If ANY of your numbers don`t match they`ll roll you. Motor, trans, dash, etc. The most incredible civic I have ever seen fell fictim to this and was sent to the crusher. It was a total loss for the owner. This car made the some of the jdm themed vehicles that sold for 20-30k look silly. Pretty sad.
I am glad they are cracking down though. I just hope they don`t assume that everybody who has a swap is a crook.

good stuff (my buddies EG just got stolen)... but i just hoped this stays respectful and doesnt turn into a "look at anyone with a civic..those damn theives" type of affair.
It's funny that the JSpek guys won't even talk about the issue on their web board.
Anyone live in Houston know what is going down?

they should release the VINs so we can see if any of the cars are from here. they should definitely start doing that more often at all shows IMO. Hire one or two guys to get some VINs, run them through Police dispatch, and arrest/tow away the bad guys. Granted Im sure people will deny they knew about it being stolen but that is probably BS and they should know better before buying.

I completely agree. If the motor comes with no papers it's kind of a given.

always do that..
Yack (b18cxr) was pulled over (did nothing) in a po dunk redneck town one night (~2 years ago) coming back from Rockingham dragway...
The cop asked him to pop the hood and show him the motor... then asked for the bill of sale.
Yack reached into the glove box and pulled out the Import Auto Salvage reciept (laminated) and handed it to him.
The cop snet him on the way.
He was kinda pissed that he was pulled over for no reason... I was happy that they knew what to look for.

Why wouldn't your friend be able to prove how he bought the parts? Company gone out of business?</TD></TR></TABLE>
He converted his car to RHD before everybody was doing it, so he wasn`t able to get receipts for certain things (dash, motor, trans). Plus, he never made copies of the numbers, so once it was in impound, he couldn`t even get the numbers to try and make receipts. He actually had a friend in Japan go to salvage yards to find his parts and ship to him. Japanese Salvage Yard receipts don`t cut the mustard apparently. It was in impound for nearly 6 months and ultimately sent to the crusher. It would have sold for at least 30k, but ended up being a total loss.

Well, it was a private party sale. So we have bill of sale that I made with Word, then we hand wrote all the pertinent info like VIN, etc in. Also have a copy of the registration and his DL (to verify that the car was actually his). Me and a buddy actually pulled the motor out of the R ourselves.
Hopefully this "bill of sale" will suffice.

They did it at a drag race at Sears Point a few years ago. They impounded cars for both stolen motors and stolen cars.
bills of sales mean nothing fron private parties. i'd recommend getting a bill of sale notorized saying it's being pulled from a certain car on a certain date. this way, you have a better chance of being in the clear.
i always carried around my h22a receipt from cunningham brothers in VA when i had my accord.
i bet a good half of the hybrids here in the ny/nj/ct area have hot motors. the worst part of it is, people don't even ask because they get it so cheap. they figure the less they know the better.
it's amazing to say, but a gsr is almost as rare as seeing an itr in this area. i seriously cannot remember when i saw a gsr on the street. i've seen an itr more recently. just weird.

I for one would have no problem keeping my "papers" with me if I had a motor swap or a lot of aftermarket parts on my car. I would think most enthusiasts would feel the same, especially given the theft problem associated with this hobby.
Then again, no one steals Volvo motors

The only problem I have with keeping my papers with me is that should my car get stolen, they will get access to personal info about the myself and the person who sold me the motor. But if its something that I need to do, ill do it.
