Question about CAI and hydrolock
hi,
i am planning to get aem cai and worry about the hydrolock issue
i know it is not likely to happen, but no one want to risk it right?
so:
1) will the by-pass valve make the cai more restrictive and therefore have less gain in whp?
2) what should i do if i hydrolock the engine? do i need a new engine or it can be fix with minimil cost?
thx!

if you hydrolock your motor, call your insurance company. they will cover it. Dont worry bout the loss of power with bypass valve, its miminal.

Insurance companies will cover hydrolock? Even though you upgraded your intake to a product which is known to carry this risk? This makes me feel better.

As a comprehensive claim? I work for nationwide Insurance and I've never heard of such a thing. I have heard of heavily modded cars getting denied for repairs when some adjusters with a stick of his *** sees stuff like cages, nitrous bottles, and, or heavily moded engines. So I assume a hydrolocked motor because of an AEM is not gonna fly with 90% of adjusters out there. I'm guessing here, but it seems highly unlikely that the Insurance co. will pick up an $8000 tab for anew engine just because some boy racer locked his motor with a cold air intake.

There is a guy on this board that just had his motor replaced by insurance ( state farm)that was hydrolocked with a Comptech Shitbox. If worse came to worse just take the damn AEM off the car and put the stock box back on and then call your insurance, thats what you pay it for. USE IT.

Insurance companies suck a big phattie!
I think if you pay so much for a car and your insurance compnay is willing to insure the car then they should accept the responsibility, just like we accept the responsibility of speeding and paying higher ins b/c of it. Just my $0.02.
p.s.- get the cai you wont regret it, especially when you play with VTEC

You've rally got to go through some pretty deep water for it to be a problem. Just getting the filter wet isn't going to do it, you have to submerge the filter in water. That'll take at least 7-10 inches of water which is going to do more damage than hydrolocking the motor, It'll proabably also flood the interior of your car.

The ECU still has power to it even if the car is turned off. That's how it keeps codes and forces you to reset it to get rid of them.

Yes, it was parked, but it still did damage, cuz next morning I turned the key and it didn't want to start and all my warning lights were on in the dash, srs, check engine, brake...

I live in Mobile, AL second only to Seatle in rainfall and the drainage here sucks so it always floods. I have had my CAI for 9 months and have had no problems. I dont drive through depp watr and slow down to a crawl for puddles. I dont have the bypass valve. I rally should get on though.

Yeap.... It was me in 6 inches of water. Nothing is Hydrolock proof not even the Comptech ICEBOX I bent 2 piston rods $4,500.00 worth of damage I need a new short block. Here are some picks of the engine.

since the bypass won't prevent minimal amounts of water, how much will cause hydrolock? I mean, not a few drops, but obviously 6 inches would. how worried should someone be driving in pouring rain (not driving through ponds) and maybe hitting a puddle or two?
I just got the bypass valve anyway, but just food for thought...

I was in the Texas floods too with mine and no bypass valve. My damgae was not as bad as Will's because my car was never underwater. I did have to drive from 610/288 area though right when it all started. It was raining so hard that there was about .5 to 1 inch of water on the road the whole time. I was driving like a grandma though but I at least I was ok.

My recomendation to ICEBOX owners is to turn the (Trumpet like section end) UP. So it has less of a chance to pick up water.

so how long the filter immerse in the water will hydrolock?
like sometime on the road there are holes that holds puddle of water when rainning heavily. If i drive thru it in 1-2 seconds, will the cai still sucks up the water? or the cai will only sucks up water in a longer period of time like immerse in water for 10 seconds?

I had the filter on my AEM almost half way submerged in water at our parking garage here (yes, I removed the corner light to see) and since It was still raining I figured I'd have to move it if I wanted to get home, so with spark plug socket and tools ready , I started her up, backed her out and pulled two of the plugs, no evidence of any water ingestion at all.
