Default Things I've learned today.

1.) ITR crank pulley is slightly smaller than a GS-R crank pulley on the alternator and AC compressor drive pulleys. The PS pump drive is the same size on both.

The alternator drive pulley is about .5" smaller in diameter, and the AC compressor drive pulley is about .35" smaller in diameter.

Approx. weight of a GS-R crank pulley is 5lb 12.1oz.

Definitely not worth the $126 + S&H you would pay for a new ITR crank pulley.

2.) A bore taper of .0019" is definitely not normal for a rebuilt engine (ie: mine). I just measured out a B18C block with an estimated 20k miles that had virtually no cylinder bore taper ( < .0001") on either of the thrust axes.

3.) Never settle for a sloppy ball-honing of the cylinder bores as a solution to deglazing the cylinder walls. Overbore if necessary to correct for straightness and piston-to-wall clearances.

4.) According to a scale at the USPS station, a set of ITR rods can be around .1oz (2.8g) out of balance b/w each other. The set of ITR rods I weighed, ranged from 1lb 3.3oz to 1lb 3.4oz. A pair of rod bearings weighs approx. 1.1oz (31.18g) I'll have weights for a set of GS-R rods for comparison later on.

4th

4th w/ bearings

bearings from 4th

5.) A stripped down P72 Skunk2 intake manifold weighs approx. 8lbs 14.4oz.

6.) Bag and label everything during an engine rebuild if you're ever gonna find it again.

7.) Coke and engines work well together. 12oz bore anybody?

Acts of human stupidity involving 4 Cokes and a B18C.

7.) Mental note to remove the front and covers and pistons/rods to check crank endplay. It was .006" on the JDM B18C, as well as .006" when I finished rebuilding mine a year ago using the ACL thrust bearings. Specified range is .004" - .014".

Your right, you don't want to lose this part . PLus you may forget what it is after a couple months. Good job. I was way too lazy to go that far when I built my engine. Where I work, microns matter, in an engine, ehh.

Great pics. I never realized how much OEM rods varried in weight from each other.

Default Hondata IM gasket studs and nylon washers

I also picked up (10) 5/16" (~8mm) ID nylon washers as replacement use for Hondata IM gaskets, and a couple of metric automotive stud from Kleindorffer's in two lengths.

The nylon washers were $.18 each and the studs were $2.10 each. Better than Acura Carland's $2.33 pricing per stud.

The washers fit over the studs perfectly. Not loose, and not too tight. Just right.

Specs on the studs are: 8x1.25, and I got them in 46mm and 50mm lengths. Stock IM studs are 37mm length. The 46mm probably won't cut it b/c when I looked at Robbie's, it looked like it needed more than an extra 9mm.

If it turns out OK, I can also get some longer studs on Robbie's car when he comes down.

Anybody have the part number and specs on the longer OEM Honda studs?

Nice work. You didnt happen to weigh an OEM P72 intake manifold did you? I would be curious to see how much less the S2 weighs than OEM.

One more thing, maybe its just me though. You say the GSR crank pulley weighs 5 lbs. 12 oz. Then you say the ITR one isnt worth it, but you never say how much the ITR one weighs. Either that, or I just dont see it.

Good stuff IN VTEC

You're a friend of Robbie's aren't you?

I've talked cars with him on AIM, and really am looking forward to meeting you guys this summer hopefully.

I'd like to see your engine rebuild go together in person, since its something that I'll prolly have to do here in a year or two.

I'm finished with school for the year, so let me know when you guys are getting together to wrench, and I'd be more than happy to help out.

Later,
JP

John's motor will probably be finished some time middle of next month.

If you guys are done with school by then, you guys might have a chance to see its maiden voyage and maybe the initial dyno tuning and street tuning.

I'll probably try to avoid tearing down my engine until after the race season is over so I can still race as much as I can, while I still can.

More measurements. The P72 intake manifold is in the trunk and it's next tomorrow.

PCT OS pistons & Wrist Pins

The same ITR rods as above only done on a gram scale.
