ITR tranny or final drive gear???
Here's the situation.. I have a type R motor in my 93si hatch. Unfortunately the tranny is a GSR.When he sold me the block, harness, head ect ect he didn't have an ITR tranny in stock at the time! And now he has an ITR tranny that he would put in my car with the LSD for 1300 Canadian because he would give me 400 bucks for the tranny I have now. Should I go this way or he recommends that I put the 98 itr final drive gear that is I believe 4.785,and a GS fifth gear in for highway curzing??? This would run me 300 bucks more though then the actual type R tranny setup, but the guy told me that the final drive gear and GS fifth would be a better setup. Any imput would be appreciated greatly! Thanks!
This is just IMO, but I think that the ITR Final Drive is a waste of money.. Think about it, why do you really need it? Get the ITR Tranny, the gearing is perfect the way it is..
Get the tranny for sure. The GSR w/ a 4.785 FD is still not as close as the ITR tranny. I'm positive about this. I calculated all the gear ratios and engine speed numbers at my shift points before I made my decision to get a 98 Spec R tranny. I love it, definitely brings your engine to life.
The GSR and TYPE R tranny both come with a 4.4 final drive(in north america). The JDM final drive is a 4.785. I have a ITR trans with the 4.785, spoon flywheel and act clutch, probably one of the best mods I have done with my car

Go with the ITR tranny and the final drive. You'll love the throttle response and the quick rpm shifts. RPM's at freeway speeds are higher which will kill your fuel economy but who cares bout fuel economy right?!
If you do mostly highway driving, then just get the ITR tranny. If you mostly drive in a city, then get a FD, but get something better than the JDM ITR one. Try to look into the ATS, Cusco, or Spoon one.

i heard the cusco is pure drag, and the ats is better for daily drivers no? but both are super expensive. anyone know roughly how much the go for? i've never heard anything about the spoon fd.......info anyone?

Cool Dropspeed,
I have a USDM ITR tranny and JDM FD along with Spoon flywheel and ACT Extreme clutch as well. Great minds think alike.
Oh, I have a KAAZ though. I hope it gets better as it breaks in
I just drove my car for the 1st time since Dec 99 (!!) yesterday. I'll have more impressions after I drive it more...
Have you had any issues with the starter and the Spoon flywheel?
Oh, as for the actual post, I would make sure you get an LSD. It makes a big difference. Also, if you stay N/A shorter gears def help our TQ deficient motors.
Thanks,

if thats 1300 installed then just do it.
I put a ITR LSD in my GSR and it was a bitch of a time to install, timewise.
I wished I put in the JDM ITR FD too, and a lighter flywheel.. drats!
yeah, go for it.. and the ITR LSD is the most important part IMO.
if the FD is extra then forget it, unless your a hardcore trackhead/autoxer.

If you do go with the ATS 4.929 then by all means get an LS 5th gear. (about $75) Difference @ 70 mph in 5th is 4329 rpm with stock 5th or 3533 rpms with LS 5th. Big difference if you travel great distances
Cool Dropspeed,

a friend of mine is a ATS distributor. yasu@ http://www.racingcraft.com
well if the price for the itr trans is 1700 canadian installed minus the 400 he's going to give you for your gsr trans then i'd say just buy the itr trans from him straight up. install it yourself and then sell your gsr trans for 800 or so. 400 for your trans is ripping you off in my opinion.
or you could pick up the 4.785 and itr lsd together for probably $750 US, whats that like $1100 cad. or so? anyways 1100 for parts, again do the install yourself and you'll be in good shape.
my decision would depend on what kind of shape your gsr trans is in. if its good and the itr trans has higher milage then i'd say go for the lsd and fd but if your trans is higher milage and the itr is in good shape then go with that. but for god sakes don't let him take your gsr trans for 400 cad. unless its grinding like a ****

I now have my GG back in my possession. It's a long story.
Anyway, I will concur that the ACT clutch is too sweet. I have barely any miles on it, but it grabs nicely, no chattering, no burning, it just feels awesome. I know someone who has the same clutch for a good price, drop me a line if interested...
Can't wait to get this broken in and feel the upper rpms!
Take care,

I have dicussed this in little detail before with ITR111 who has had both the Cusco 5.0 and the ATS Close Gear. He had the following to say:
"i think you look around .2-.3 second on cusco 5.0 in 0-60 and around the same as quarter mile. If you are using ATS..0-60 is pretty the same and you will lower around .4 on quarter mile"
"5.0 really helps when you are not in vtec zone"
"if you are using the ATS cross gear...you just change 3,4,5 gear....so you won't have different on 0-60 "
"5.0 is a very large FD.....so the rpm will be a lot higher then stock GSR "
Maybe some of that will help you make a decision. I still dont know what i am going to do. It seems like it would be nice to have some more 0-60 speed, but I dont know about those freeway rpms with the Cusco. Does anyone know how the car would run if someone put in a Cusco 5.0 and then swapped in a GSR 5th gear?

With a GS-R 5th and Cusco 5.0 FD you will be turning 4061 rpms @ 70mph.
With an LS 5th and Cusco 5.0 FD you will be turning 3684 rpms @ 70 mph.
With an ITR 5th and Cusco 5.0 FD you will be turning 4326 rpms @ 70 mph
Of course give or take a few hundred rpms depending on tire size
BTW I use 70 mph as that is where I cruise
