Default DIY/HOW TO: Rear Strut Bar - 10 Pics - 56K Friendly

Here it is enjoy. Don't really know how I got the idea and I haven't tested how effective it is, but it was a lot of fun to do.

I bought the 4' pieces of metal from a local Lowe's for about $10.00 each.

Gotta love the dirty EK trunk

I cut both bars 110 cm's, then measured 4 cm back and cut on that angle, that give you enough room to put the bolts back on.

Almost done cutting!!!

Done, at this point I sanded some of the rouch edges down with a drummel.

Next I measured from center to center of the bolts in the car. I drilled the holes a little to close and then sanded them to get a perfect fit. NOTE: front and back are different lengths...measure each seperate!!!

Here is a pick of both the bars installed without the stabalizers cut and put in.

Close up of one side.

I took the extra material I cut off the edges and places those for support. I still need to get them welded in and am gonna take off in about 1 hour to get that done at a friends house. i think i had to cut them at 7.5 cm.

A close up of the supports before welding.

Enjoy guys...let me know if you have any suggestions of questions. I still have to get it painted and reinstall the interior.

PauL

UPDATED: I got it welded last night and just got a weight from the postal scale at work. it weight 5 lbs. I don't know if that is good or bad? does anyone have the weights for other popular bars like mugen, cusco, benen, etc?

I bet his will be stronger, ever held an ebay strutbar? Plastic has more reinforcement......and what can that do for you?

I like his man, wanna sell one? You could have fun making a few, now that you have a template. I like how it is solid tube construction, the strut towers are held by a seamless tube that WILL not flex. All other 2/3/4 piece strut bars do flex.

When you channel all the stress into a small piece, then sure it up by useing a standard bolt will result in flex.

to the DIY man.

Well i went and bought some metal blades from Lowe's for my jig saw, but got the wrong ones...so i 1/2 used those and 1/2 used a hacksaw. I didn't want to spend the money, but if you have a metal blade for your chopbox that would work the best.

why did you decide to cut the angle, instead of just drill through the whole thing and use a washer?

Very cool, and so simple. I would almost feel stupid buying a pre-made bar.

Are the bars pretty heavy? I'm wondering if it would be hard to find a lightwieght alternative.
