Default So I did some data logging these past few days (CAI factual #'s)

For anyone who doesnt rememeber my posts about my DIY cold air intake using the j's short ram intake:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=443182
https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=450315

I got around to doing data logging in my car.

Now the data logging was done for trying to get an answer regardign something else on my car. It is probably not ideal for figuring out and testing the effectiveness of my cold air intake. But it does easily show what is happening.

About 2 minutes before the run, I was parked at idle for about 10 minutes workingon the laptop. So the intake manifold was hot because of no fresh air being brought into the engine bay at all.

on to the numbers...
10mph128deg
20mph128deg
30mph128deg
40mph127deg
50mph125deg
60mph120deg
70mph115deg
80mph111deg
90mph106deg
100mph102deg

I didnt do any datalogging, but I had my laptop and did notice when driving in the day time (the above test was done at night) I was getting 90deg air intake temps driving on the freeway.

At around 85ish mph I was getting over 1 bar of intake pressure (that would be the ram air working) at other speeds I would get a steady 0.980

I know this isnt the best of tests. I will do more tests with taking out the hot air shield in the engine bay and testing it at different speeds. And also test covering the duct in the bumper

I will try and make a graph to illustrate better the results. I will at least do a couple more runs tomorrow and post the data

Nice work. I am currently in the process of making an aluminum heat shield similar to yours. Since I have an RS and no ABS, I am making the box huge and am going to be using the biggest K&N filter I can squeeze in there. I plan on running two intake ducts, one like yours but from the front of the grill (I don't have the ***** to cut the bumper like you did ) and another one from behind the turn singnal up through the hole left by the old resintator hole in the fender.

Good work

One question, do you think it would be wise to run the largest K&N filter I can get? I figured that more square inches of surface area would equal more air being passed throught it.

im guessing bigger the better.

My friend has a K&N filter on his car that bolts on to mine. I might do some tests to see how his compares to mine.

I could do a 30-100ish run and compare times...

good luck with the cold air ducting

i do agree that it needs something to compare to.. it doesn't say much by itself.

out of curiosity.. what was the temperature that day?

you can probably decrease the temperature if you use more coverings to compeltely isolate the filter from the engine bay

great work bob

Thanks, the filtier I will be using will probably be 10 inches long. Right now, I have a cheap ebay special short ram and filter that I am hacking up to make the intake. The piping feels like some kind of cheap metal and then has a crome coating. Do you think I need to wrap the intake tube in something or just leave it?

It wont hurt to wrap it. But think about how much air is moving through there, I doubt that there will be even a noticable difference. it might be 1-2* degrees of difference
