Default Need some info on the b17

I know they came in the 92~ gsr. Aren't they basically a b16 with a longer crstroke? I think I can get a deal on a whole swap. What tranny do they come with? I searched but only found some for sale.

I see that the tranny is cable so that won't work in my 5g. My question is how much can I reap for the tranny and longblock? I'm thinking of a set-up like this:
c1 bottom end rebuilt w/ ctr pistons .25 ob or w/ cp 12.5 pistons and eagle rods
b17a head rebuilt w/ skunk2 cams stage 1, gears, and ITR valve springs and retainers

I see that 2g teg guys seem to like the tranny with the b17a and I think I can sell the longblock for a good price for the b20/vtec guys. How much do these things usually go for?

Also how much is this worth? It's the b17a and the guy said make him an offer. I think he's asked 1650 complete and no one took it. It has 85k miles and a perfect tranny he says.

Woah that looks like a rough 85k! I'd be worried since the swap doesn't look too taken care of. Note the oil skirt under the head The B17 is a strong motor and the tranny is one of the only cable trannys i'd get a conversion for. Very close gears. If you can get the swap for cheap I would do it but it doesn't look to be in good shape.

And really I'm going to be tearing this thing apart and just using the head. I think the crank and transmission are highly wanted. I'm wondering how much I can get for them though. The only thing I really want is the head and swap peripherials. Is 1400 an ok price or should I go lower?

Well I'll give him $1200 max cause like you said you are just going to use the head. and a B17 is just like a B16A1 and you can get those for around $1200 complete swap.. so around $1200 is a good price to offer.

Maybe I'll start at 1000 at work up. It does have 85k on it.

Yup about a 1000. It has low miles, but that looks really beaten and poorly maintained. Then re-do the whole things and you don't end up spending as much as you thought.

crazy, looks like it is "right off the boat", but its not.

Reminds me of the first gen b16's after they had been in a junk yard for years in jdm land, then in a container for months, then in a wet/dirty wherehouse for 2 years....then shipped to your door .....

Other than that the exterior-physical appearance has nothing to do with the history of the motor. I would rather a motor that a maw-maw owned, and never cleaned-than a 10 owner, 17 year old's dream that he cleaned every day, and raced every night.

I am really concerned about the chances of such a old rare motor being good?? I mean, seeing you buying an 11 year old motor, with a million miles, and a grinding third gear for 1200+ makes my bones cringe....

I think I'm gonna offer 1g and see what happens. I think I'll keep the whole swap and rebuild it with CTR pistons and skunk2 cams. I'll prolly sell the tranny to someone who can use a cable and buy a JDM ITR or something.
