difference between jdm'88-'91 b16 & jdm '92-up b16 block
ok, i know that the compression, hp & transmisson are different....i bought a B16 bare block from my friend and i don't know which is which (neither does he)....are the engine blocks the same? i'd like to build it to the '92-up (170hp)...btw, i'm planning on swapping it into an '88 crx si (which is obd0)...what do i need to do....please give me some advice....thanks!
88-91 has a small shaft cable tranny
92-93 has a large shaft cable tranny
94+ has a hydro tranny
Those arent really difference with the block but you said that you knew there were differences in the trannys, so there they are.

Is the rad fan temp switch on the block or the thermostat housing?

This is a first gen 1 mil series from an integra. You can see the 2 prong green sensor. The later models had this switch on the thermostat housing.
*I dont know how concrete this is, but it is what I have noticed an all the swaps I've done*
Kamin, I believe the 1 million and 5 million series just tells whether it came from a CRX/Civic SiR or Integra XSi. The Integra is 1 million series and the Civic/CRX is 5 million series.

I would like to get to the bottom of this too. I posted a similar question to little avail... here's the link. https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=470164
It seems like the bhp and c/r values are the operative issues here. It looks like the DA6/DA8's in the chart in the third row down (see pimpin's link) have "second gen" bhp and c/r. Maybe these motors are the other 1% re Kamin's post.

most of the "1 series" are the cable type 89-91 B16.
"5 series" can be tricky because even the 170hp B16's have so-called "5 series" too.
This is why I personally do not use the "1 & 5 series" lingo, its a bit misleading.
The biggest block difference in the 160hp & 170hp B16's or 1st gen & 2nd gen b16's are the PISTONS. ALL of the 89-91 blocks have a 'PR3' part number on the piston top(s). ALL 92+ B16's have a 'P30' on the piston tops. So if yer real curious, take the head off and peep.
If you have a complete B16 motor, that to the best of your knowledge hasn't been dissasembled, take a look at area between the VTEC solenoid & distributor seen here:
only the 92+ B16/PR3 heads have this, 89-91 B16 heads do not have this.
If you want to use the 2nd gen/170hp B16 in your EF/crx, you'll need to place the 89-91 B16 transmission & clutch, throttle body(optional) ,injectors, distributor, exhaust manifold (made for two 02 sensors) all onto the 2nd gen B16. Of course, you'll have to use the PR3 or PW0 ecu that came with the 1st gen b16 in your EF to make it all work.

Thanks Katman.
Allow me to split the hair a bit finer: I have a JDM B16 with the "30" casting per your photograph. The head and block are in their original relaionship. This motor has a cable tranny which I believe is original. The block stamp is the 1XXXXXX variety.
Does this mean that the tranny is not original, or could this setup have come from a '92 Integra as it is?

-- Yes, thats a JDM 92-93 DA engine you speak of. Sort of a rare bread, but still a 170hp B16A because of the cross-board change to OBD1 in 1992, upgraded electronics & hardware hence slightly more HP.

Okay, thanks.
This brings up another question: I've been running this motor with a PR3 ecu. It also runs well with a PWO. What is the appropriate ecu for the motor? Is the PR3 hampering performance? It runs really well with the PR3.
Thanks again,
Paul

sciolist is correct,
88-00 JDM B16A's say "B16A" on the block stamp. However some other countries used different suffix's. I believe I saw a batch of 1st gen B16A's come in that were stamped "B16A2" but it was still a 1st gen.
for the USA, 94-95 B16A's were B16A3 and 96+ were B16A2
