Default 18 teeth shredded right off on my timing belt....motor possibly blown?

In reference to this post
https://honda-tech.com/zeropost?cmd=reply&id=4843866

I cut the timing belt off the car yesterday to try to figure out what might have went wrong. I'm guessing that the timing belt slipped, or maybe one of the sprokets seized up causing 18 teeth to be shredded clean right off.

Could my AEM cam gears have caused this? Could the belt have gotten flimsy over time?

The belt that blew was on my car since early 1998, and my car now has 56K miles on it. i probably changed the belt at 30K or something.

In addition I am running Toda B camshafts, maybe that caused the problem?

Very cool of David to come to your rescue.

I would be downright amazed if no valves were bent!

My money's on the cam gears as the culprit.

chances are 18 teeth = most valves bent. do a compression test and look at the numbers if your numbers are really low you have bent valves. then you get to pull and disassemble the head, send it to a machine shop, buy new valves, have the machine shop do a valve job, reassemble the head, and start from scratch again. total cost is going to roughly 500.00 for everything. some people have this luck with toda b's. you gotta pay to play with high lift cams. i highly recommend you check your timing belt tightness with those cams frequently and if you run a stock belt change it every 6 mo. or so depending on the mileage you put on your car.

Charlie, You most likely have bent valves. I installed B's with a stock timing belt and slipped. Result = All my valves were bent and my 2 crank bearings gave way when the valves tapped the piston. To make a long story short....Blown Motor

same thing happened to me, w/ a brand new stock timing belt, it could have been possible that my belt was tensioned to tight, but the result was a number of valves being bent, meaning another re-build, i am currently using the toda belt, and check on it as often as i can. good luck

anyone ever figure out why this happens to toda owners, i have JUN IIIs and they put out the most pressure on the valvetrain than any VTEC camshaft out right now (besides the Toda Ds) only when in VTEC. JuN III love to eat titanium retainers though

Toda 'B's are actually notorious for shredding timing belts. 18 broken teeth means you probably bent valves. Once you get the head fixed, I would recommend the Toda or PE timing belt, as others have said. I just got my PE timing belt in the mail today from Leo at JDM Spec Performance for $165 shipped to my door. to Leo for quick service and a good price.

i agree, i previously had a full JUN head package before i put in a new head which included toda b's, and i never had any difficulties w/that set up...but i must say i do prefer my current setup now...although it did take significantly more tuning

I'm not really trying to hear this but I realize that I must prepare for the worse.
I would hate to do a rebuild though, it would set me back really bad.

I already ordered me a Toda Timing belt. I'll wait and see what happens next.
Man I wish I can get me and Evo 8 instead and start over again.

like i said, big lift cams, you gotta pay to play

to be honest with you, just go do a compression test real quick, it will tell you right away if your valves are bent

quick note: you need to replace the timing belt to do the compression check.

yeah, he can just get a stock one from a friend or something instead of waiting for the new belt to arrive in the mail
