the question I have is about the flywheel...are those hot spots in the pics..should I get it reesurfaced?? and what's up with all that red dust...is that normal???

EDIT-Going to get the flywheel resurfaced. Better safe then sorry right?! And I got the flywheel off by using a prybar and placing it in the teeth of the flywheel and put in one of the tranny bolts to rest up against. Worked like a charm. Now to get it resurfaced!

I'm gonna be installing an ACT XT-SS in my B18B1/GSR tranny equipped Civic this weekend, and i am most definitely going to resurface the flywheel.

If the flywheel is "out of spec" it could lead to "clutch chatter", ripping the disc material apart or right off the backing plate, etc.

Don't take the chance!!! Just take it to a machine shop and get it resurfaced. It is only around $20 to do so...

My guess would be that it's a combination of rust (from the iron flywheel and pressure plate?) and the clutch material. My old one was pretty dusty but it was more brownish.

 

where can u get it resurfaced at?autozone..ect? thanks

 

you better get that **** resurfaced unless you want ot waste the money that you spent on the clutch.

I sure as hell hope you have an impact too cause with out the engine in the car, its hard as **** to get the flywheel bolts off with the motor rotating.

Damnit!! No impact tools, so it's gonna be a pain in the ****??

 

The dust is normal, its part of the reason why u put a new clutch in the disc wearing out just like brakes do, and dont be to confindent that ur gonna get those bolts out with out air, u can try to jam the teeth on somthing or maybe stop the crank pulley from moving is another one good lluck.

 

I had to put my engine in the back of a friends car and haul it to a shop to have the bolts blasted off with an impact.

I mean, there are back yard ways of trying to get them off but, worst case scenerio is, taking it to the shop.

Your going to have to find a way to prevent the engine from moving / turning over.

Sometimes you can get a prybar on the crank pully bolt which will prevent the engine from turning over but, its still kindof iffy becayse the engine will usually fall over. lol.. Good luck bro and keep us updated. but, no matter what, GET IT RESURFACED@@!@

thanks guys...I think i'm gonna try to use a prybar or something first....if it doesn't work i'll take it to the hobby shop near my house....

time for a new flywheel bro??? that poor clutch isnt going to enjoy having sex with that flywheel

 

my flywheel looked just like that, two years ago, when I installed a new ACT hdss clutch setup. I never resurfaced the flywheel, BUT I did check it for flatness and it was in excellent condition. Also note that I have not had a problem since and it has been 20k miles. In fact I just removed my clutch again and the flywheel looks the same if not better.

if it is smooth and flat, I wouldnt bother resurfacing the flywheel.
also that red dust is completely normal.

Another option might be strapping it down like crazy to a car's wheel (while it's on the car) or to a post or some stationary object. Just tossing out some ideas in case the prybar doesn't hold it.

 

a) You were lucky
I have done this method before and it worked for about 10k then I starting having issues with slippage. Im not saying its NOT possible. Kindof like using torque specs. If you dont, you may be ok. But ifyoudo, you know your ok.

b) Its a pain in the *** to pull just a tranny.
Way harder than just doing a swap IMO. Especially when worknig from the ground. If resurfacing cost 40 bux. Whoopdie doo. Just do it becase if it dosent work properly, see C.

c)Clutch manufactor warrantee:
Almost every maunfactor implies that you get the flywheel resurfaced prior to installation. This is because the clutch disk has material on the fresh surface that allow the clutch disk to mate properly to the flywheel. If the flywheel hasnt been resurfaced, the clutch will simply slip and chatter on the scored spots mostlikey resulting in poor engagement and decreased lifespan. Not to mention, once you have it installed and it does chatter etc, you have just reuined your new clutch. So, youl be uninstalling the clutch and buying a new one then getting the flywheel resurfaced.

or get a flywheel holder, using a prybar on parts something might bend. yaaa i know hes trying to get the flywheel off just thought of it , but he might be able to get them broke free.

You do not have to resurface the flywheel when you buy a new one right?

 

i would, so they can brake in to gether, just in case you want to make power.
