Default checking my LSD

is there a way to check to make sure my LSD is working properly without actually test driving the car?

jack up car, put car in gear, spin a tire...look at the other tire and see which way its spinning. should spin in the oposite direction if i remember right

Yes, jack up the car and turn one wheel, but...

Have a helper attempt to hold one side still while you turn the other. There should be significant resistance to holding one while turning the other.

And unless I'm forgetting something, you do NOT want the car in gear.

for this test to prove anything the tranny must be in GEAR ... not neutral.

Once again, the "one wheel spinning the other way" test will show the same result regardless of the presence of an lsd. Thats why the wheel of your friend with the GSR spins the other way just like yours. Unless you have really beaten on your LSD, I doubt it is broken.

Take a corner hard in the wet. You should know if it is working or not.

Just got my Helms manual... woohoo!

Page 15-23 describes a "Rotating Torque Check" procedure for the LSD:

1 - Set parking brake and block rear wheels

2 - Raise front of vehicle and support with jackstands

3 - With engine off, shift transmission into neutral

4 - Measure the rotating torque with a beam-type torque wrench in the direction shown (shows CW on driver's side). Rotate more than two complete turns and take the maximum reading

5 - Shift into 1st gear and measure the rotating torque again

6 - Calculate the rotating torque as RT = T5/T4 (where T4 is torque as measured in step 4 and T5 is as measured in step 5). RT should be at least 2.5.

7 - Repeat steps 3-6 for the other wheel

8 - Replace LSD if RT < 2.5

Cheers!

If my memory serves me correctly the ITR's LSD only works under load. A lot easier to just take the car out for a spin

The first statement is absolutely correct. On every car I've ever worked on, if you jack it up and turn one wheel, the other wheel turns the opposite direction. This is regardless of the type of differential. The difference between an open and a limited slip differential is that if you hold the wheel on one side of an open diff, you can still turn the other side fairly easily. With a limited slip, it should be much more difficult.
