Default Okay, went to the track and here are my times....

Well I went to the track yesterday ran 4 times. Wanted to see what my car would be running and I was hoping to run at least mid-high 15's. Here are the SH!TTY A$$ results.

It was pretty hot outside but I don't know the exact temp though.
Mods I had while running:
AEM CAI
AEM underdrive pullies
DC SS 4-2-1 Header
Thermal "stealth" exhaust
VAFC and tuned

Didn't have enough time to wait and run at night when it was all cold outside.
Maybe I can at least hit 15.9xx in cooler weather... or at least with the Hyper Ground Cables..(that i am still F-in waitin for! ) UPS- Unsatisfied Pissed Student

PS-(first time at track)

Decent times for an SS. Did you shift or run in auto mode?

not too bad for the first time out, the SS would explain the crappy 60' times... how are you launching?

its supoosedly faster in automatic. and you would have to worry about staying in vtec becuase of the VAFC. did you take out the spare or do any other lightening mods to your car?

a co-worker drove my old manager's 2001 SS for a week while he was out of town... he said it seemed to do alot better in "manual mode" rather than auto

Not too bad for a SS...right??

My first time to the track I ran a 16.2 after I bought it. It has 157K miles, original clutch, no name tires, didn't know when the last tune up was, and needed an oil change. It was drizzling out and VERY humid. This was during July.
The spare was even in the trunk.

My car was completely stock too.
I think with the new SO3 tires, a tuneup, and 5W30 oil...I should break into the high 15's

I'm not talking **** at all because I'm driving a damn near stock motor 3rd gen, but I'm suprised how slow an unexperienced driver in a 5th gen SS can run. We did a small prelude meet at the track one time and the guy with an SS that had a Vtec controller, headers, cam gears, and some other **** was running 18s!!!! Based on your times I'd say that's not bad for an SS.

Actually I didn't take anything out of my car. Still had my backpack in the car(3 heavy books) and the spare tire. I didn't really think that the backpack would matter that much though. I launched by steping on the brake and the gas at the same time(power braking), then releasing the brake when the light turns green. The rpm's rests at about 2200rpm. I set the Vtec at 4200rpm. Why would it be a problem to stay in vtec while I'm in auto mode?

OR how about I start off the line in auto then hurry and shift it to 2nd to keep it in VTEC, then knock it back to auto? Kinda complicated but who knows..
I hate my SS tranny... if had a 5spd.. what do you think I'd be running? high 14's?

You can start in "Auto", because it will launch better, but do not leave it in "Auto" mode after you hit 2nd gear, in fact you should shift into SportShift mode before you're even out of 1st (it's tricky, you'll have to time it just right), as the SS tranny will not hit VTEC or won't rev high enough (depends on how hard you floor the pedal; haven't you ever noticed that, with VTEC set at it's normal level, you can stomp it and barely/not even reach VTEC engagement at all before it shifts?) for you to stay in VTEC when it/you shift into 2nd. No matter where your VTEC engagement is set (and yes, I think 4200 is too early), shift as late as possible, just beware of shitty SS rpm creep (I know you've noticed this; on some cars the rpms have been known to still creep up as much as 400 rpm after you've already shifted, resulting in a nasty and uncomfortable meeting with the rev limiter.)

The reason you would have a problem staying in VTEC in "Auto" mode is because in that mode the transmission wants to upshift as soon/early as it possibly can, and naturally yearns to be in 4th ASAP, as any automatic does. The "Auto" mode is programmed for maximum mpg, not just-short-of-redline shifting.

As for what you'd be running in a 5 spd, who knows? If your skills are good, yeah, maybe low 15's/high 14's; my best friend ran a 15.2 on his 1st run in his bone stock (& now totalled) '99 SH w/the spare & an amp in the trunk.

OT: sorry to hear you gave up on the boost dude; I'm ordering my Greddy kit Friday.

Sorry unrelated but i thought that Thermal didn't have a "Stealth" exhaust for a 5th gen they tried but it didn't meet the db limit of 95 that they concider Stealth.

Should I change the vtec engagement point to 4700? Because Carboy(shop) told me I don't have to because they dyno tuned it while it was set at 4200.. even though I have already been messing with the vtec engagement points..
