Oil consumption?

I've recently began to worry about my R and its ever increasing consumption for oil. I eventually switched from Mobil 1 to normal Castrol GTX to try and lower its oil use but it hasn't helped. On average I go through 3-4 quarts every 3,000mi. I basically have to add oil every time I stop for gas. My compression is good and the car still runs pretty strong ( I trap 100.89mph with 173whp), but its getting a little out of hand. How much oil do you guys go through? As long as I keep a check on it is there any real reason to worry? Is it hurting my performance?

Mine's pretty moderate....
depends on my foot really.....
Did a 9hour trek to another province...stayed in VTEC for like 2-3hours at a time.... went through 2liters in about 400miles.
Do a leakdown test...it's better than a compression one if you are concerned....might show some other clues....

I tried starting other threads here and in the Integra forum, and sadly nobody posted anything too useful. The most common suggestion was to go back to conventional oil from Mobil 1 synthetic, but that didn't help me out. Changing valve seals didn't help any at all either. I suppose I should get a leakdown test done but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Any suggestions on where to go for a cheap leakdown test in the LA area?
some guys with gs-r's were replacing valve seals
edit\\ let me check on that...maybe it was the guides? gah....

seals, not guides
If oil consumption can come from a number of places.
if it smokes at idle or cruise then you change the valve seals.
if it smokes under load(throttle) then its rings.
and remember, the smoke has to be blue

I've had mine cleaned out and checked, replaced with a newer one to test and it seems to have cut down on the consumption a bit.
When I was doing the Hondata IM gasket install (still shook from that experience hehee) I noticed a fair amount of oil pooled inside the IM.
Where do you think the oil goes? Coupled with a test pipe....it makes for some wonderful smoke rings.....
Like Steve said, I would experiment with a 10w30, 10w40 or 15w40.
well, 10-30 and 5-30 are the same weight.

10w30 will have a higher HTHS (high temp viscosity basically) than a 5w30. I just suggested a 10w30.... if that doesn't help consumption, try a 10w40 or 15w40. They will have a higher HTHS #.

A lot of the HTHSfor 5-30 and 10-30 are the same, and they are mfg specific.

I'm wondering if there's a direct correlation between B18C's and using Mobil 1 Synthetic... how many of you have oil consumption problems with Mobil 1? My previous poll didn't work out too well =\
According to those numbers thats not exactly true.

Get your car checked out properly dude.... as no engine should be dropping or consuming that amount of oil, in the time you specified.
dont trip bro i use 3 quarts every 3000 miles and im using 10-40 valvoline. my compression checks in at 225 on all 4 cylinders. using a special diagnostic tool called a borescope, i found where all my oil is being burned at. basically a borescope is like a magnifying glass that you insert into the cylinders and check the condition off the cylinder walls. my #3 cylinder has one scratch going up and down which pretty much defeats the purpose of having a properly honed cylinder wall. the cylinders have a crosshatch with a 60 degree pattern. so all it takes is one scratch on any of your cylinders and boom you have oil burning problems. hope that helps

When I had Mobil 1 5-40, it did not loose a drop. Came oil change I thought I'll try Castrol Magnatex GTX and its drinking quite a bit...
I will be switching back to Mobil 1 to see if there is any difference.
