ok just more prep for the 2004 season, when im ready to tear down for the paint job for the following season and getting the new chassis work, where and is it worth it to acid dip the chassis im around the housotn area so any where around here would be nice. is it worth it ?thnx guys-pdang

I have no experience in this, so keep that in mind... but I was speaking with somebody about acid dipping and they told me that I would be better off sandblasting the body...
His thing was that when you acid dip the body, the acid gets into places in the body that you cant wash out... So then the acid sits there and corrodes the body...

just something that Ive been told. So take it for what its worth.

try calling up modena auto body..they are on the sw side, they might know.

I had thought I read somewhere that its illegal to do? I guess they would have no way of telling that you did this though.

Yes Mike I believe you are correct. But I think that is only in California that is illegal.

 

We use a Alkaline solution that does not etch the steel...but will harm aluminum. We have found up to a 150 # difference in weight....also is great for paint adhesion. The place that does it for us charges $1200 also but we deliver and pickup for our customers...so we charge and extra $500 for that....unless the customer wants to do the drive....its a 5hr trip each way for us....but most of our full race car deals that we do , the car gets dipped....We did both of Sean Glazars cars.....Lyle Holmes....Chris Bobiks....lol we sand blasted ours, thats a big pain in the ***!!!

I would think the weight restrictions would be high enough you wouldn't have to go that extreme.

150 pounds must include all the sound deadener, seam sealer undercoating. That sort of stuff on an old domestic ('67 Camaro, '70 Cuda, etc.) was worth 100 to 150 pounds. After stripping all the sound deadener and undercoating off, dipping the body was worth another 35 pounds, max. Any more than that and you could poke your finger through the metal. (literally)

So I'm assuming you don't scrape or blast anything like sound deadener off the car before you dip it?

You're right about the sand blasting. I did one 15 years ago, and the new owner tells me he can STILL find sand falling out of it!

 

Itz just nice to acid dip it to get all that junk glue outta there even tho I didnt do it 2 my race car.

 

There are no true un-neutralized acid diping facilities open any more. Actually there are but just like Alkaline dipping places and other softer forms of acid. The kind of acid that actually takes off metal is not available anymore. The EPA has shut them all down. Trust me I spent a whole month doing research on this trying to find a place for my racecar. The closest I came to finding something is a place tha galvanizes fences or metal. And this place called Revivation in Central Florida (941) 773-2545. They use two tanks, one is the strip tank and the other is the de-rust tank. After being dipped in the de-rust tank your chassis is good for 2 weeks before it starts to rust. They quoted me $1400 for my shell which had no doors and body panels.

Well when we took Sean Glazars Talon , which BTW had no sound deadening in it, we weighed it before and after.....it weighed a 170# lighter. This was Alkaline which doesnt attack any ferrous metals. But when the car was back in the shop you could definetly tell it was dipped.....when you tapped on it it sounded like an echo chamber! When we took Lyle Holmes 2gen Eclipse it came back almost 200# lighter....and even his car didnt have sound deadening in it.....remember both Hondas and Mitsu's have a thick coat of crap underneath too.....lots of seam sealer too.....We are takin a HB to get dipped here soon too....Ill have the weights before and after in about 3 wks.......and since the car comes back perfectly clean you can also add spot welds or even lay down some beads on some of the seams for strength too.....My personal race car still to this day leaves piles of "BLACK BEAUTY" underneath it too......that sux!

That's amazing. Maybe all the "crap" and seam sealer is how the car makers compensate for smaller size and thinner metal used today, as compared to the old American dinosaurs. Gotta keep them quiet inside somehow, for street use. Thanks for the update.

Pete, depending on which solution they use. Wouldnt wanna weakin tha cage. Ask the people that are doing the dip how if effects moly or whatever your cage is made of.

 

Alkaline based solutions will not affect ferrous metals..,......

this is Mike not Adam, Adam is proelite103...not a problem though! Do your cage before dipping, this way the cage will have the rust inhibitor also!! Glad i could help!

 

Any links? You said its ~$1200.00..is this anything that a street car could use? Im desperately in need of some weight reduction..BTW I dont daily drive my car..It is a full street car though..All stock body panels. TIA
