What style helmet do you wear?
I'm trying to figure out what style of helmet most racers wear. For full face helmets I've allowed you to choose "with shield" or "without shield" since I know some racers remove the clear shield on their full face helmets because they never use it, and some even wear helmets like the Bell SR-Pro which is a full face helmet, but has no clear shield.
In general, I'm not trying to distinguish between autocross and HPDE's really. I'm just trying to figure out what most people wear. Personally, I wear the same helmet (SA Full Face) for both autocross and HPDE's, but I know some people don't.
With shield for me, I like my eyes how they are.
I spent my youth hanging out with the domestic drag racers. I've seen the effects of a scattered tranny, with and without a shield or blanket. It's not pretty.

...but most of the stuff I do is Solo II and the shield just gets in the way.

M-rated full face with a tindted shield here for auto-x. The shield is a nice to have for those early morning runs when the sun is low. I just lower the shield low enough to block the glaring sun.

"i start doing track events i'll have to figure out a way to use the shield without getting my glasses foggy. isn't there somesort of spray that helps?"
You can buy anti fog for your glasses any drugstore should have it,you can also use it on your sheild.

[QUOTE i suppose when (if) i start doing track events i'll have to figure out a way to use the shield without getting my glasses foggy. isn't there somesort of spray that helps?[/QUOTE]
you can use any bar of soap (one with glycerin) and rub it on the inside of the shield. afterwards, polish it with a soft cloth and you should be good to go. this works on glasses, ski goggles, etc. try it, it really works.
i also heard that saliva works too (works in goggles for swimming/diving so i assume it would work) just spit on it and wipe it i guess. *shrugs shoulders*

For the record I run closed cars now and wear a Bell MAG 4. Guess it is the "old school" in me. As for full helmets-they are perfect for open cars. I agree that the level of protection of a full model is greater under those conditions-but in a closed car I feel more comfortable in my present setup and can wear prescription goggles if required.
EE PEE, how do u like the G force helemt?? is it SA rated?
If I were to do any other form of high performance driving,
I'd go with a full face, though.
well for all those of you who don't understand open face helmets at all i'll give my thinking a try... yes i like my face.. but the way i see it i'm more likely to have a serious incident driving down the highway without a helmet at all. however, i don't do many track events, my cars still have airbags(mostly cause i'm lazy), and for autox you gotta be kidding me. The advantages of open face are..... less weight and not as hot. would i go road racing with open face? probably not, certainly not because i didn't own a full face helmet. but honestly for autox the weight saved seems better.. also if i even hit anything it seems like i'd be less likely to suffer neck injuries do to the heavy helmet. yes i could buy a 400 dollar plus full face helmet and have it be light.. but i'll stick with my bell mag 4 for now. basically for what i'm doing i don't feel threatened by wearing open face helmet. the day that changes i'll order a new helmet.... for what it is worth bell m2 weighs basically double what my mag 4 weighs... atleast they sure feel that way when i hold them... maybe somebody else can tell me differently.
I use an SR-Pro with impact resistant wrap around glasses. If you've ever chased somebody like Blake Meredith around a track you learn that one very useful trick in racing is to throw dirt at guys wearing open faced helmets. It's pretty hard to catch a guy with Georgia red clay in your eyes.
I learned this the hard way.
But fully enclosed visored helmets make me feel claustrophobic and makes my face hot. So the happy medium was the SR-PRO with glasses. So far it works just fine.

Rather light I must say, not sure if it underweighs your open face though. I was perusing drivers suits today and found a place that actually carries Arai SA Helmets
Needless to say, a sub-3# full face fiberglass SA helmet caught my eye but then again, I always thought Arai were pretty badassed (I think my Bell is under four pounds but not under three - not sure on that though). Despite the fact I am not in the market, I thought it was pretty impressive.
Now to dream about this and the PBI suit I found today.

I know most auto-x events will let Mrated helmets slide. But will most HPDE events let it slide or will they make you run a SArated helmet?
I know Speedtrail told my friend he had to get a SA rated helmet. But they let him do the event anyway. But also another friend has had hisMrated helmet for awhile and he hasnt had any problems. And he also ran that same speedtrial event.
